32)

 1: Now the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle (in Heb. this verse begins and ends with the word "cattle". Fig. Epanadiolosis, to emphasise the first cause o the division): and when they saw the land of Jazer (Heb.=Yehovah helps), and the land of Gilead (=heap of testimony, rocky region), that, behold, the place was a place for cattle;
2: The sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the princes of the congregation, saying,
3: “Ataroth (=crowns), and Dibon (=wasting, cp. 21:30. Josh.13:9,17), and Jazer, and Nimrah (=clear water, only occ. of this word, called Beth-nirah, v.36, and Nimrim. Isa.15:6. Cp. Josh13:27.), and Heshbon (=contrivance; by implication intelligence, stronghold. 21:26. Cp. Josh.13:17), and Elealeh (=God has made, the ascending of God), and Shebam (=spice, fragrance, only occ. of this word. Called Shibmah, v.38. Cp. Josh.13:19. Isa.16:8,9. Jer.48:32), and Nebo (=prophet, the name of a Babalonian deity), and Beon (=to anihilate. Called Baal-meon = lord of the house; Beth-meon, Jer.48:23; Beth-baal-meon, Josh.13:17. These were the places in the coutries of Sihon an Og on east side of Jordan. Cp. Josh.16:2,5,7 v.38.),
4: Even the country which the Lord (Yehovah) smote before the congregation of Israel, it is a land for cattle, and your servants have cattle:”
5: “Wherefore”, said they, “if we have found grace in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan.”

6: And Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben, “Shall your brethren go to war, and shall you all sit here?
7: And why discourage all you the heart of the sons of Israel from going over into the land which the Lord (Yehovah) has given them?
8: Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.
9: For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol (=cluster of grapes, cp. 13:23,24), and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the sons of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the Lord (Yehovah) had given them.
10: And the Lord's (Yehovah's) anger was kindled the same time, and he swore, saying,
11: ‘Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob (all 3 mentioned together here as equally subjects of the oath of Yehovah, cp. Gen.50:24); because they have not wholly followed Me:
12: Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the Lord (Yehovah).’
13: And the Lord's (Yehovah's) anger was kindled against Israel, and He made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the men of that generation, that had done evil in the sight of the Lord (Yehovah), was consumed.
14: And, behold, you all are risen up in your fathers' stead, a multitude of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the Lord (Yehovah) toward Israel.
15: For if you all turn away from after Him, He will yet again leave them behind in the wilderness; and you all shall destroy all this People.”

16: And they came near to him, and said, “We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
17: But we ourselves will go ready armed before the sons of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
18: We will not return to our houses (promise fulfilled in Josh.23:3,4), until the sons of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance.
19: For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward.”

20: And Moses said to them, “If you all will do this thing, if you all will go armed before the Lord (Yehovah) to war,
21: And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the Lord (Yehovah), until He has driven out His enemies from before Him,
22: And the land be subdued before the Lord (Yehovah): then afterward you all shall return, and be guiltless before the Lord (Yehovah), and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the Lord (Yehovah).
23: But if you all will not do so, behold, you all have sinned against Yehovah: and be sure your sin will find you out.
24: Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth.”

25: And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben spoke to Moses, saying, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.
26: Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead:
27: But your servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the Lord (Yehovah) to battle, as my lord says.”

28: So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:
29: And Moses said to them, “If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the Lord (Yehovah), and the land shall be subdued before you; then you all shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession:
30: But if they will not pass over with you armed to do battle before the Lord (Yehovah), then you shall bring over their baggage, and their wives, and their cattle earlier than you into the land of Canaan; so shall they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.” (Septuagint rendering)

31: And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, “As the Lord (Yehovah) has said to your servants, so will we do.
32: We will pass over armed before Yehovah into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours.”

These were placed in due order, east and west, in 2 ranks; Hebron over against Bezer, Shechem over against Ramoth, Kedesh over against Golan. If the Lord enlarged their lands, they were to add 3 more [Deut.19:8,9]).
15: These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the sons of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them:

that every one that kills any person unawares may flee to that place.

16: And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
17: And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
18: Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
19: The revenger of blood (see v.12) himself shall slay the murderer: when he meets him, he shall slay him.
 20: But if he thrust him of hatred (Deut.19:11,12), or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;
21: Or in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of blood shall slay the murderer, when he meets him.

22: But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity (cp. Ex.21:13), or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait (see v.20),
23: Or with any stone, wherewith a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, that he die, and was not his enemy, neither sought his harm:
24: Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of blood according to these judgments:
25: And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge, whither he was fled: and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was anointed with the holy (=set apart, see Ex.3;5) oil.

 26: But if the slayer shall at any time come outside the border of the city of his refuge, whither he was fled;
27: And the revenger of blood find him outside the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer; he (the revenger) shall not be guilty of blood:
28: Because he (the slayer) should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

29: So these things shall be for a statute of judgment (= a regulative statute, cp. 27:11) to you throughout your generations in all your dwelling-places.

30: Whoso kills any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses (Fig., put for evidence given by it): but one witness shall not testify against any person to cause him to die.
31: Moreover you all shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer (cp. Ps.49:7. Only God can redeem [v.15]), which is guilty of death (=if he has unlawfully caused death, Fig., "guilty" being put for the crime which caused it, Heb. "wicked, to die"): but he shall be surely put to death.
32: And you all shall take no ransom for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.

33: So you all shall not pollute the land wherein you all are: for blood (ulawfully shed) it defiles the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it (cp. Gen.9:6).
34: Defile you not therefore the land which you all shall inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell: for I the Lord (Yehovah) dwell among the sons of Israel.’ ”

1: And the heads of the families of the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the sons of Israel:

2: And they said, “The Lord (Yehovah) commanded my lord (Moses, to whom the commandment was given, 26:52,53, &c; 27:6,7) to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the sons of Israel: and my lord was commanded by Yehovah to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.
3: And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance.
4: And when the jubile of the sons of Israel shall be (cp. Lev.25), then shall their inheritance be put unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are received: so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.” <>  5: And Moses commanded the sons of Israel according to the word of the Lord (Yehovah), saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph have said well.”

6: This is the thing which the Lord (Yehovah) does command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them marry to whom they think best; only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry.
7: So shall not the inheritance of the sons of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of the sons of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
8: And every daughter, that possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the sons of Israel, shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the sons of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers.
9: Neither shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; but every one of the tribes of the sons of Israel shall keep himself to his own inheritance.’ ”
10: Even as the Lord (Yehovah) commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad:
11: For Mahlal, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married to their father's brothers' sons:
12: And they were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

Epilogue

13: These are the commandments and the judgments, which the Lord (Yehovah) commanded by the hand of Moses to the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho (this verse forms the closing Epilogue to the whole Book of Numbers).
