Columbus was founded in 1840; eight years before Wisconsin was admitted to the union.  The first settler, Major Elbert Dickason, built a log cabin and a sawmill on the west side of the Crawfish River in 1839.  Yet long before that native Americans inhabited the area, as indicated by artifacts which have been found.  After the first influx of Yankee settlers from the east, many others of German, Welsh, Scandinavian and Irish heritage followed.  The family names of many of these early settlers live on as street names in the city -- a city rich in architecture and social history. 

Architecture is an attraction Columbus offers the casual tourist or seasoned student of design.  The city is particularly noted for its elegant turn-of-the-century homes and commercial buildings, and strives to preserve and promote this particular heritage.
