Devil's Lake is located in Central Wisconsin, three miles south of Baraboo, in an opening or gap in the hills of the South Range of the Baraboo Valley. These ancient hills are formed of quartzine rock which consists of grains of sand tightly cemented together by nature. As the seas withdrew the quartzine rock buckled upwards forming the North and South Ranges and many scenic rock formations. About fifteen thousand years ago, the Wisconsin Glacier covered the area. If it weren't for the glacier Devil's Lake would not have been formed and the area would have remained dry. The lake is spring-fed and varies in depth from 40-50 feet.

I discovered Devil's Lake when I was a Girl Scout leader many years ago. My family attended the Boy/Girl Scout campout the first weekend in October for many years. Boys and girls from all over attended and we met lots of people from all over the country. Through the years I think we hiked almost every trail at Devil's Lake.
As it was almost impossible to get parents to help chaperone, camping at Devil's Lake became a family affair. My husband, Jim would help me chaperone anywhere from 12-20 girls. My sons, Jeff & Jimmy would tag along. Jeff always enjoyed it as he was 1 year older then most of the girls and enjoyed showing off his camping skills. Jimmy was 8 years younger and would be thoroughly spoiled by the girls.
Through the years I amassed many pictures. Going through them, I realized there was very little sunshine at Devil's Lake. Most of my pictures were taken on cloudy days. I remember many campouts when it rained the entire weekend. There is nothing like 12-20 wet sleeping bags, soggy tents and crabby girls to make a campout memorable. But we all have fond memories of the people we met and the trails we hiked.
Here is my Devil's Lake Photo Album.
Last fall Jim and I went to Devil's Lake again. We hiked some of the trails we did many years before. Although not as easy as it was when we were younger, I climbed some of the rocky bluffs and made my way through the wooded hills. It was a very enjoyable day and brought back many fond memories.
