The Hurricane's first appearance was actually a redrawn Mercury story, but once Captain America Comics took off Hurricane took on a life of his own. During the Golden Age the Hurricane was the "son of Thor, god of Thunder, and the last descendant of the ancient Greek immortals." This is, needless to say, a rather confused mythology, but the strip has vigorous Jack Kirby art, so no one was going to complain too loudly. The Hurricane came to Earth from Mt. Olympus to fight his ancestral enemy, "Pluto, the Devil." He did so both as the Hurricane and in the mortal guise of "Jake Curtiss." In some of the later stories he was aided in his task by the portly storekeeper Speedy Scriggles.

In the modern era, in the pages of Marvel Universe, it was revealed that the Hurricane, like Mercury, was actually the Eternal Makkari in disguise.
