The Purple Mask was actually Dennis Burton, a young Assistant District Attorney who had grown frustrated with crime and decided to take the law into his own hands. The Purple Mask was actually Burton's second attempt at being a superhero, the first having been the Laughing Mask.

Unlike the Fourth Musketeer/Blue Blade phenomenon, where there was no textual link between the two heroes, the Purple Mask is clearly the successor to the Laughing Mask; the Laughing Mask has the same background, origin, and modus operandi as the Laughing Mask, down to his twin .45s and killer vigilante approach.

The Purple Mask also has a secret crime lab which he uses to help carry out his war on crime.
