FUN WITH PREFIXES! AmeriCorps, it being a world of its own, has its own vocabulary. Many terms are either acronyms or pseudowords that begin with "ameri" (as in AmeriCorps? get it? yep, thought so.) PS, this probably isn't interesting to anyone not in AmeriCorps, but I'll share it anyway. Ready? Here we go! Ameri-wear: oh-so-classy uniforms of khaki BDUs and gray shirts that inevitably are covered in dirt and paint Ameri-folk: anyone in AmeriCorps, duh Ameri-life: um, life in AmeriCorps. But you figured that one out, right? Ameri-debt/Ameri-budget: ha ha, or lack thereof. "Living" "allowance" is a loosely relative term when it comes to the US government, man. Ameri-corpse: a deceased AmeriCorps member; or, stupid joke. OFFICIAL ACRONYMS CM: Corps member TL: Team leader PT: physical training. Usually ultimate frisbee or nonexistent. But don't tell the admin staff! BDU: battle dress uniform. Made for men only. When worn on girls, usually "frumpy" is the best descriptor of the look as a whole. ISP: independent service projects. Eighty hours required by graduation, in addition to the 1680 hours of corps-related service. SL: service learning CAP: Corps Ambassador Program. Recruitment! This is the fun part, taking AmeriCorps back into the real world (describing life in the rustic woods to a roomful of Brooklyn high school students is a pretty unique experience!). Somehow it seems like there's no way to accurately describe the Ameri-experience; one cannot emphasise enough the growth, the learning, the strength of the bonds formed. |
