PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Simon Gagne scored on a penalty shot late in the third
period to help the Philadelphia Flyers defeat the Atlanta Thrashers, 5-4.
Gagne, who was interfered with in the offensive zone when Andy Sutton shoveled
a broken stick towards him, beat goaltender Pasi Nurminen on the backhand for
his seventh goal in his last nine games. Joni Pitkanen had two power-play goals
to go along with a season-high three points and Sean Burke stopped 32 shots for
Philadelphia, which halted a three-game losing skid. Nurminen finished with 27
stops in the loss. Ilya Kovalchuk recorded three points, including a goal to
extend his goal-scoring streak to four games, and Marc Savard chipped in with
three assists for Atlanta, which has lost six of its last nine.
