PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Jim Vandermeer recorded his first career two-goal game as
the Philadelphia Flyers downed the New York Islanders, 3-1, on Saturday.
Vandermeer evened the score at 1-1 late in the second period and tallied his
third goal of the season 6:18 into the third to give his team the lead for
good. Simon Gagne added his eighth marker of the season and Robert Esche,
making his first start since December 5, turned aside 18 shots for
Philadelphia, which snapped a five-game winless skid. Garth Snow made 16 saves
in defeat, dropping his record to 7-7-1. Alexei Yashin had the lone goal for
New York, which fell to 2-9-2-1 on the road.
