Distant Drums

Special thanks to
Heirloom Old Garden Roses
for the use of this lovely photo of "Distant Drums."

"I'm sorry, this rose is unavailable."  "We are out of stock."  "We have so many back orders we can't accept any new orders."  These were the words I heard over and over again as I tried to locate a source for "Distant Drums."  Finally, I was able to purchase two one-year-old plants from Great Lakes Roses in Belleville, Michigan.  We are pleased to finally add "Distant Drums" to our garden after reading so many wonderful things about its hardiness, disease resistance, and especially its unusual color.
Bred by Dr. Griffith Buck in the 50's, this rose has become extremely popular.  I believe that rose hybridizers and gardeners persist in their search for a truly fuss-free rose that also has spectacular beauty.  Distant Drums qualifies with a most unusual combination of warm and cool colors.  Shades of brown, tan, and lavender suffused with a blue-pink glow create a visual fiesta.  The photos at the
Buck website and in Traditional Home's Rose Gardening by Elvin McDonald show off Distant Drums to great advantage.  Best wishes finding this rose for your garden!
