It is with some hesitation that I am planting Don Juan in the garden this year.  It is not reliably hardy in my zone, and I'm wondering if there will be winter kill of all canes every year!  I will be planting the bud union 5 to 6 inches deep, so I'm not worried about long-term survival of the plant itself, but it's such a shame to start from scratch every year-- especially with a climber.  A chance for cane survival might come with burlap wrap stuffed with oak leaves.  The reason I'm taking a chance on Don Juan is because my daughter is crazy for red roses, and she has specifically asked for this one many times.
The deep red blossoms are strongly scented.  They begin as dark red buds which open into exhibition quality roses.  All season, clusters of showy blooms grace this large-flowered climber.  The leaves are, happily, very disease resistant.  A show of bright orange hips in autumn completes a striking picture.
