Lady X was an impulse buy from Walmart. My mom found it in a barrel of roses all marked $1.97. It's not much of a budget breaker to experiment with a new rose for that price! I planted Lady X in a new rose bed near the vegetable garden. Information about this rose was hard to come by at first, but someone from the American Rose Society provided us with helpful facts. Lady X was introduced by Meilland of France in 1965. As a test rose it won a gold medal in both Switzerland and Oregon. It has fallen out of favor with rose exhibitors due to a long neck with sparse foliage. The rose is somewhat tender. It can attain a height of 5 to 6 feet and has an upright habit. Vintage Gardens lists Lady X as one they will custom root. In this first season I found Lady X to be indescribably beautiful and reliable. The scrolling buds unfurled delicate, silvery petals edged with palest lavender-mauve. Blossoms were exquisite in form with a pleasant fragrance. No diseases marred her foliage, and there was vigorous growth. A bargain at any price! |
