Paul's Scarlet Climber

Paul's Scarlet Climber

Breeder:  William Paul, England

Parentage:  Paul's Carmine Pillar x Reve d'Or

Introduced:  1916

Class:  Cluster-flowered Climber

Color:  Red

Scent:  Slight

Size:  10-20 feet

Zone:  Cane hardy in zone 5, shade tolerant

I finally identified (translated, "best guess") the vigorous red climbing rose growing on our north-facing brick wall-- after I dug it up and threw it away!  The rose was so plagued by mildew and insects that I just couldn't stand it any longer.  The above photo shows Paul's Scarlet at its best.  Believe me, it got pretty awful!  I think now it would have been better to just move it as I did Golden Showers, but hindsight is 20/20.  Perhaps a change of scene and some good air circulation would have been the cure.  The old roses should be preserved.  Act in haste, repent at leisure.
This rose has an awesome display during the last three weeks of June.  On a perfect day there is a slight fragrance, but on most days it reminded me of insecticide.  I never used any bug spray on it, but that's what the flowers smelled like!
Blossoms are double, loose, and shatter easily the second day after they open.  Looks pretty as an addition to informal bouquets.  May be worth a try if you need shade-tolerance and the color red.

That's our golden retriever, Sunny, in the photo.
