The Pilgrim

June 2000

This lovely yellow English rose is apparently well thought of in rose circles considering the amount of information I was able to gather on it from the internet.  So many people grow it, and so many are quick to sing its praises.
Soft yellow roses, old-fashioned looking and edged white, appear in charming clusters amidst attractive foliage. The blossoms are wonderfully fragrant too!  The Pilgrim is a rose that's eager to produce flowers.  An admirable trait-- that's why we grow roses, isn't it?  The lovely green foliage is healthy too.
Country Lane Nurseries suggests going easy on nitrogen when fertilizing this rose.  Too much nitrogen will encourage what is commonly called "The Jolly Green Giant Syndrome--" canes shooting up 6 to 9 feet with a greater susceptibility to disease.  If you've been careful, and you get ungainly growth anyway, just cut the canes down to the size you prefer.
Another important tip from Country Lane is the fact that flower buds may appear other places along the canes than at the leaf axil.  Be careful when pruning!
