We left off when Die carried an unconcious Kyo and
they were off to save
Toshiya.
Part 19
When Kyo stirs, Shinya gives a tiny squeak of
surprise.
Together they are curled up in the backseat of Kaoru's
run-down car, Kyo's
head is cradled in the lap of the drummer and when the
blonde's eyes
flutter open his first words are: "Don't take him...!"
"Kyo-kun!", Shinya exhales surprised, a world of
relief shimmering in his
voice.
"Shi...Shinya...?!", the blonde is disorientated,
getting up dizzily and
looking around, "Where are we?"
Die looks back and grins: "Welcome back among the
living, Kyo!"
Kyo realizes the presence of his both other band-mates
and grits his teeth:
"They took Toshiya!", he informs them.
"We know", Shinya states and nods.
"We're going to where they took him", Die adds, still
giving Kyo the grin
to lighten up the mood. Kyo blinks again.
"How long was I passed out?", he asks, finding the sky
still dark.
"About fifty minutes, I guess", Shinya answers
"Oh..."
Suddenly two strong but whip-thin arms are wrapped
around him, holding him
tight and the scent invading his senses is exclusively
Shinya, who
whispers: "I'm so glad you're okay."
Kyo feels strangely comforted, unfamiliar warmth and
strong emotions
drugging him. Shinya isn't really the impulsive type,
so the blonde man is
even more surprised.
"Mmhm-phm...", he mumbles into Shinya's chest, meaning
"I can't breathe".
The drummer releases his iron grip and Kyo resurfaces
from the embrace.
When he breathes in deeply, he notices something
glittering on the younger
man's cheeks. It looks like molten silver.
"Shinya...", he whispers, "Are you crying?"
The drummer wipes the beautiful drops away: "Baka, I'm
just so glad you're
back." Kyo notices a strange, hollow glance from the
red-haired guitarist
then, alternating between him and Shinya.
"Die...", he lifts an asking eyebrow, "What's wrong?"
Die snorts in a displeased way, yet forces out a grin:
"I'm thinking about
how to kick their asses good."
"Yeah, right", Kyo shakes his head, "Where are we
going anyway?"
"Saving Toshiya", comes the simple statement from the
front of the car.
There is no hearable guilt in Kaoru's voice, but the
fake calmness lets Kyo
wonder about the state of their leader. He remembers
the brutal blow they
handed on the band-leader
"Are you okay, Kaoru? Did they hurt you?"
"A little."
"It sounded pretty bad."
"I'm still alive. It's Toshiya we have to worry about
now.", Kaoru sounds
almost sad, the guilt is now lacing his tone. Kyo can
almost sense it and
somewhere feels a little bit of evil satisfaction.
Serves you right.
But then he is concerned :"Are you really alright,
driving the car and...
stuff?"
"I'm handling."
Kyo shrugs and feels the hand of Shinya lacing their
fingers together for
reassurance: "Don't worry, Kyo-kun, we will rescue
Toshiya. My father will
probably go on according to standard procedures. That
means, he will
examine the probe first, paying special attention to
the outer marks. What
has changes since the cyborg was discharged and is
there any damage. Stuff
like that."
The small blonde man doesn't find himself enthused by
Shinya's calm words,
they worry him even more. Before his eyes scenes
appear.
Toshiya lying on a silver table, men in white smocks
standing around,
writing down results and definitions, while Toshiya's
eyes are still open,
seeing yet he can't do anything, can't move a muscle.
Conscious while he's slowly taken apart.
A soft nauseous whimper escapes the singer's throat,
before he urges out:
"I certainly hope you're right, Shinya."
"He's always been like that, Kyo-kun. I don't see why
he should change his
behavior now."
A gentle smile settles on the young features, aiming
at the blonde, even
though there is bottomless sadness in the brown eyes.
"He's inhuman, Shinya", Kyo mumbles, before he
realizes who exactly he is
talking to, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be
disrespectful. He saved me
after all."
The grip on his hand tightens, when Kyo finds himself
feeling guilty too.
Guilty for not being able to save Toshiya in the first
place and for now
destroying Shinya's belief in his father. He bites his
lower lip, when
Kaoru asks: "Where to now, Shinya?"
"To the left", the drummer points out and adds: "Not
much farther."
"It's close to your father's laboratories!"; Kyo calls
out, recognizing the
streets.
"True, he's never been much of a walker", the bitter
joke of the drummer
hangs burns like acid in their ears. Not very often
that they get to hear a
remark like that from the polite young man.
Everything changes from now on. Nothing will ever be
like it was before.
Not me, not them, rushes through Kyo's brain. Like a
chain reaction, we all
affect each other.
I wonder when it started...
Bitterness floods his veins.
No, I know... it started when Kisaki threw me out of
that car.
The moment he laughed so carefree, so beautifully full
of life, opening the
door, calling my name before he pushed me: "See if you
can find happiness
in the dark, butterfly!"
But I couldn't fly, I could only hit the asphalt and
then I found the
darkness. I wasn't exactly happy there.
The car stops, jerking Kyo out of his train of
thoughts.
"That's it?", Die asks skeptically, studying the
run-down building in front
of him.
"Yes."
"Really?"
"Don't be deceived by outer appearances, Die-kun",
Shinya shakes his head
softly. He leaves the car and opens the trunk to
unearth some bags, where
Die joins him : "Do you really think that I'm deceived
by appearances?"
"Maybe. I don't know if you would fancy the real
Shinya, if he was still
alive."
Die throws his hands up in utter desperation: "You are
the real Shinya,
dammit! You are the one and only Terachi Shinya, stop
all this nonsense
about "If he was still alive" or "I hate this body"
and accept that
whatever this body is, it is you! Will you get a
grip?! Really!"
Kyo, who has left the car but has to struggle wit ha
certain amount of
unpleasant dizziness, looks at the enraged guitarist
and the baffled
drummer with squinted eyes, but Die gets meek when he
sees the small man,
taking two bags from Shinya's arms and stomps off.
All the while Kaoru holds his hurting ribcage and
tries to ready himself
for the rest of the night.
Prepares to lead them, this time not musically.
He must save that cy...no, his band-mate. it's the
only way to acquire
redemption and some sleep in his lonely nights.
When he opens the door and steps out of the car, he
sees Die stomping off.
He follows the large strides of the red-head: "Die,
wait!"
Pouting the second guitarist stops, until the leader
reaches him: "What's
up, Die?"
"It's Shinya. Man, I really can't understand him,
sometimes."
Kaoru says nothing, just waits for Die to talk.
"Sometimes I feel that he's within my reach and
then...he slips away again.
I really want to..."
Helpless one hand sinks and the curled fists loosens,
somehow awakening
protective pity inside of the band-leader.
"You want to...?"
"I want to be close to him. Help him, support him, you
know? I can see that
he needs help so desperately, it tears him up inside,
but he is unable to
ask for it."
"Die...", Kaoru smiles sadly because there is no
bigger heart to be found
anywhere. Whenever they need strength of the heart, it
is Die who provides
it, but this generosity bleeds him dry slowly, makes
him harder and leaves
him even more alone in the end. There are no words to
console him, no
wisdom to comfort him.
So Kaoru takes his hand and cradles it against his
chest: "Die-kun, thank you."
For the second time their eyes meet, unmasked, two sad
and lonely souls
searching for a tiny straw to hold on to. It is not
electricity that sparks
between them, it is recognition, knowledge.
"Hey you two cutie love-birds!", they hear Kyo's voice
from afar, "We're
here to rescue Toshiya, okay? All of that
stare-into-each-other's-eyes has
to wait."
"I second that", Shinya agrees, snatching one bag back
from Die's hands.
"We were not...!", Kaoru defends himself and Die, but
the other two men
hurry to a dark entrance, without stopping.
Shinya opens the door with a key and waves to his
band-mates to follow him.
Inside it is dark, the air is old and smelly, urine
and sweat, not very
inviting, everything screams out: "Better turn away
and leave! Find a
better place!". Maybe that's the whole idea.
"Very promising", Die tries to joke, causing the other
three to smile tiredly.
"Follow me!"; Shinya whispers, even thought he knows
there is no need to
whisper, since the doors they are about to find are
soundproof. It's just
the whole spooky feeling and his own conscience, still
calling him to stop
and rethink his ways, that make him quiet.
The four men sneak through the semi-darkness, the
lithe drummer like a
shadow in front of them, switching on cold lights to
illuminate their path,
even though the light frightens them more than the
darkness.
Emptiness surrounds them, as if the world has died and
this building is all
that is left, their final resting-place.
"This is it", Shinya stops and the other three men
gasp.
Steal-doors, shining....right out of a science-fiction
movie.
"How do we get in there?", Die hisses, gulping.
"Not a problem", the drummer muses sadly, "The problem
is: How will we get
out again once we have Toshiya?"
"What do you mean, Shinya?", Kyo asks, trying to
understand the situation.
"I know the code right now, but we are going to steal
a very precious item
from Goki Motors. I'm afraid they won't just let us
walk away with him
afterwards."
"What does that mean? How will we get out then?",
Kaoru asks, wondering
whatever they are going to do afterwards, who has ever
heard of a
successful band on the run?
"I will short-circuit this exit, open it and make them
believe it is still
closed, you understand?"; Shinya hauls a laptop out of
his bag and connects
it to the controls of the door.
"Wow, you can really do that?"; Die studies the
drummer with a newfound
admiration.
Shinya gives the darkest shadow of a wicked smile,
before he starts to
enter codes in the laptop, Kyo looks around, finding
himself transported
inside his very own nightmares.
The smell and the darkness, the desolate feeling. But
he knows what he's
doing here, since it's not him who is in danger this
time, he discovers a
determined side of him he hadn't known before.
Push away the fear and focus on your aim.
Yes!
The drummer is doing a good, fast job and the door
slides open, everyone
peering inside with wide and anxious eyes, in there it
looks just like in
the corridors around the lab of Shinya's father, Kyo
thinks at once. He's
been there far too often.
"Just like the other lab", he whispers and Shinya
nods.
"Exactly. This is where all of the cyborgs were made.
What you saw upstairs
were just the successful results. Do you know how many
Toshiyas there were
in the first place?"
All of them shake their respective heads and Kyo
whispers: "I'm not so sure
if I even want to know."
"Me neither!"; Die agrees and shakes his head. Kaoru
holds his rib-cage and
takes a hurtful deep breath: "Maybe we should better
think about rescuing
this one cyborg first?", he states in a very low,
energy-lacking voice.
"Uhm, is there a sort of plan?"; Kyo asks, suddenly
aware of just how
unprepared they were walking in.
"There wasn't much time to think of a plan", Kaoru
says and straightens
again, before he walks inside of the labyrinth of
corridors. "We just have
to go by ear."
After Shinya has unplugged his laptop, Kaoru finally
is their leader again,
for he is the first to step beyond the doors and the
other three follow him.
