Abner Andrew BLACK was born about 1820 in Tennessee, according to the 1850 of Mississippi County, Missouri.  From the family information that we have Abner was in the Civil war. Though no Civil War records has ever been found for Abner. We have a biogrophy that was written by his son Ulysses Grant BLACK in 1937.

Abner was married twice, first he married Rebecca Jane GOSNEL on March 20, 1845 in Dearborn County, Indiana. Rebecca died in Indiana and then Abner married Catherine Charlotte RICHARDSON on September 11, 1856 in Jefferson County, Indiana.Abner died in 1866 in Mississippi County, Missouri, near Charlston.

  Catherine had a sister named Jane RICHARDSON who had married William RICHARDSON, according to Grant's biogrophy Jane  and Catherine Charlotte Richardson and William Richardson were cousin's. William and Jane lived in Jennings County, Indiana and Decatur County, Indiana.

i. Elizabeth Black born about 1846 in Indiana married  Robert GEER on February  18, 1866 in Mississippi County, Missouri.  This family lived in Charlston, Missouri.
ii. Sarah BLACK born about 1848 in Indiana married William GEER on  January 18, 1866 in Mississippi County, Missouri. This family lived in Charlston, Missouri.

iii. Jasper Abner BLACK born December 25, 1856 in Mississippi County, Missouri, died January 27, 1928, Anderson, Indiana married February 9, 1884 in Carmi, White County, Illinois. Lydia HOCKERSMITH  born 1856 in Indiana, daughter of
Michael HOCKERSMITH and Mary EDDLEMAN..
iv. John Logan BLACK born April 1, 1863 in Mississippi County, Missouri died August 19, 1897 in Decatur County, Indiana married May 12, 1885, in North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana. Martha Ellen SAMPSON, born January 30, 1862, in NorthVernon, Jennings County, Indiana, died April 16, 1925 in Westport, Decatur County, Indiana. Daughter of Joseph SAMPSON and Nancy HIERS.
v. Ulysses Grant BLACK born August 16, 1867 in Carmi, White County, Illinois died before 1955 in Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana married Rachel Alice SAMPSON born  August 16, 1867 in North Vernon, Jennings County, Indiana died before 1955. Bartholomew County, Indiana, daughter of Joseph SAMPSON and Nancy HIERS.

Martha Ellen Sampson Black was married three times, her first marriage was to John Logan Black, her second marriage was to Fredrich Byford Houpey,  Fred was born in Germany, he got off the train in Decatur Co., Indiana and the Sheriff said to Martha "Here is a man you can have."  They were only married about three years and Fred died just right before the birth of his son. She had one son by him Frederick Byford Houpey, Jr.  her third marriage was to James Black.  Martha divorced James Black

I don't know how James Black is related to our Black family.
