August Joseph Mathieu, Sr. was born near Paris, France. Family history that has been handed down is that his father John Mathieu died on the day that he was born.Several years later when August "Gus" was a teenager their was a war going on in France. To avoid having August go to war as his older brother had, his mother sent him to an uncle that was living in Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Johnson who was from around Bowling Green, Kentucky.
