~ Give You Back ~
~*~
The rain fell softly on the roof of the car, dripping down the windshield
in front of her like tears. Only the wiper blades passing by every
few seconds kept her from thinking that she was crying, but her face was
dry. Ali had been sitting in her car, parked in her driveway, listening
to the same song on repeat for the past 40 minutes, and though no one was
home, she couldn't bear to go inside. She breathed a heavy sigh as
the song started again, and wondered what stepping into that house and
seeing his things would do to her. The drive home alone had put a
ball in her throat so big she was sure she'd stopped breathing at one point,
seeing the places they had been, reliving aspects of their life together.
Ali leaned her forehead against the cool leather of her steering wheel,
trying to concentrate on the sound of the music and the wiper blades, instead
of the multitude of thoughts that swam in her head. But
the words leaked in, and the turmoil continued no matter how hard she tried
to focus her thoughts. It was like a ghost was haunting
her, taunting her with her own memories, and no matter what she did, nothing
was going to make him go away. She wished for the chance to
go back, to go back and relive the last year of her life, so she could
change things. Change her life, change this moment. It shouldn't
have been like this, she thought to herself, still unable to leave
the confines of her car. It was supposed to be perfect, it was supposed
to be forever. She could still hear his first words to her, echoing
in her head with each passing moment, a flood of memories washing over
her with each word...
'I would die for you...'
