Kayla busied herself in Nick's kitchen, pouring food into the dishes for all of Nick's dogs and filling up their water. She was alone in the house again, the guys rushed off to their latest worldwide press junket leaving her to do what she had been hired for. Things between she and Nick were progressing rather smoothly, and she had actually heard Nick refer to her as his girlfriend the day before he left, usually he was very elusive about making things that real in his own mind. She knew it scared him, that relationships in general scared him, so hearing the words come from his mouth made her feel at ease about what they had going, especially when he was leaving for so long. AJ hadn't said anything to her since the day a few weeks ago he had left the angry message on her answering machine, he hadn't said anything to Nick either, at least to her knowledge, but it was none of his business. He had no right to pass judgment on any of her choices, she never criticized him or what he did in his life.
Kayla's thoughts were shot back to reality with each shrill ring of the telephone. She quickly grabbed it from the wall before they could hang up and muttered "hello."
"Hey." Nick said on the other end, his voice a pleasant sound. "How are you? How's my dogs? How's everything?" He asked like he hadn't talked to her the whole month he'd been gone.
"Everything's fine. How's the media stuff."
"Boring." He sighed. "Why don't you come here for awhile? Keep me company."
"Where are you today?" She asked, knowing the answer already.
"Canada. You know that, come on, I'd love to see you."
"I don't know Nick, I have things to do here. You know I do more than feed your dogs."
"C'mon, you can get Andy to watch the dogs, and it'll just be for a couple of days." He whined. "We can do anything you want, even monopoly."
"You must really be desperate for some company." She laughed.
"You don't even know. So you'll come?" Nick said full of eagerness and hope. Kayla wasn't sure. It was one thing to be with him here, but to fly to another country to see him, seemed kind of scary.
"Call back tonight." She finally said. "I'll decide by then."
"Fine." He sighed. "I'll talk to you tonight then. Bye." Nick hung up the phone in his lonely Toronto hotel room. He hadn't consciously decided he wanted Kayla to come up and be here with him, but when he heard her voice he missed her. He hadn't felt that feeling in so long, wanting to see someone, wanting to be around someone, someone who wasn't Jenna. He was the only one here by himself, all the rest of the guys brought people with them on this press tour, eight weeks of constant media frenzy, two of them here in Canada, were too long for most of them to be away from the people in their lives, but now a month of that time had passed and Nick needed someone here with him, he needed Kayla, and knowing that they'd be taking off to Europe next week only made him want to see her more. Nick scanned through the channels on the television, stopping on one of the movie stations and mindlessly watching an action flick he had seen at least a half a dozen times this week already. When it was over he couldn't wait any longer, quickly dialing the number again and impatiently waiting for her to pick up.
"Hello." She said on the other end.
"So are you coming?"
"I don't know Nick!" He could hear the dejection in her voice.
"Why not, what's stopping you?"
"Nothing's stopping me. And I can't think of any reason why I shouldn't go, but I still don't think I should."
"Why don't you think it's a good idea?"
"What am I going to do in Toronto while you're off doing your thing?"
"There's lots to do here."
"Then why are you so bored?"
"I'm not bored, I'm lonely." Nick stated.
"You have tons of people around, who are you trying to fool."
"It isn't the same, I want you here with me."
"Why do you want me there?"
"I miss you okay." He said. He heard Kayla take a deep sigh which was followed by a long pause.
"Kay, are you still there?"
"When
do you want me to come." She said. Nick held back the urge to yell
'whoo hoo' in the phone and told her he'd call her right back with flight
details. She had argued about getting her own ticket, like he knew
she would, but he hung up before she could use the full extent of her stubbornness.
After calls to the airlines he was assured her tickets would be waiting
for her at the airport in Florida and called her back. She'd be here
by tomorrow afternoon. Nick slept peacefully that night, the television
still on, and his body curled up in a ball on the right side of the bed.
Anticipation running through his heart.
Kayla hovered over the side of the bed, the light of day had barely begun to show itself and the incessant sound of cars, and horns and people had yet to awaken in the city. She watched him sleep, the blond mass of hair matted down on his forehead and she resisted moving it away from his face, afraid she'd wake him. When she called to confirm that her tickets were there, she checked if she could get an earlier flight, she hadn't told Nick, but when she realized he really did want her there, that it wasn't just his voice saying he wanted to see her, but possibly his heart and his mind, she knew she wanted to see him just as much as he seemed to want to see her. She was sure if Nick knew she wanted to come that much she would have been on the first plane, but he safely gave her a night to pack, she just didn't want it.
Kayla had been lucky, she was able to get a flight that left just after midnight, stopping momentarily in Atlanta and continuing on to Toronto, she'd get to Nick in a little over 5 hours.
Now she was here, watching him sleep and thankful he had already added her name to the room registration at the desk. The man behind the counter happily gave her a key when she explained her surprise (and after she'd shown him sufficient ID, he was in fact a private guest, and she could have been some psycho from off the streets.) He didn't wake when she came in the room and set her stuff down on the floor, the television created enough white noise for him to be oblivious to sound this early in the morning anyway. The room seemed small for the amount of time he'd be staying here, she just assumed he'd have a giant suite, full of couches and flowers and fancy things, not this modestly small bungalow. Kayla sat down in the huge and comfortable white chair next to the bed, her body sinking into it's soft cushions as she watched the subtle way his chest rose up and down, his blankets entwined at his feet, his hands curled under one side of his neck. She wanted to wake him up, to just sit and talk and tell him about everything he'd missed in the time he'd been gone, even though she'd already told him everything over the phone. She wanted to hear about what he'd been doing, she just wanted to hear his voice.
Kayla jumped when the phone rang, her breath catching in her throat. He rolled over to answer it, turning away from her. She stifled her laugher as he mumbled to what she assumed was his wake up call. Kayla checked her watch, 7 am, she'd have been on the plane by now. Nick rolled back over and lay with his arm draped over his eyes, oblivious that she was in the room. Finally after about twenty minutes he got up, sitting on the edge of the bed and rubbing his face to wake up, reaching for the remote and turning off the television. He rubbed his hands through his hair and shook his head, he saw her bags before he saw her, confusion and fright washing over his face before he turned to see her sitting next to his bed. A huge smile splayed across his face, erasing whatever bad thoughts had run through his mind, as he stood up and pulled her to her feet enveloping her in a warm embrace.
"What are you doing here?" He said, his voice still morning hoarse and quiet.
"You told me to come."
"I mean what are you doing here now?" He explained, still holding her tight, breathing her presence in.
"I took an earlier flight."
"I'm so glad you're here." Nick kissed her forehead, brushing the dark hair from her eyes with his fingers. "You tired?"
"Yes and no."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I probably am tired, but I don't feel it yet." She said comfortably leaning against him as he stroked the hair on her head, her eyes closing. "Although I think I could sleep right here."
"How long have you been here?"
"My flight came in just before six."
"I'm glad you're here."
"You said that already." She smiled.
"I mean it." He said finally pulling back from the hug. "I'll be right back." he said apologetically going into the bathroom. Kayla ran through her mind how glad she was that she decided to come and finally kicked off her shoes and took off her coat. She sat down on the bed and curled into the place he had been sleeping, a little of his warmth still remaining.
"I knew you were tired!" He said coming from the bathroom, sliding in behind her before she could get up, putting his arm over her body and spooning behind her.
"I'm not tired, just cold."
"Sure." He said unconvinced. Pulling all the blankets and sheets up over them and wrapping his arms around her again. "That better?"
"Much."
She said, snuggling back against him and drifting off into sleep.
The ringing phone awakened both of them from their slumber, Kayla taking a few moments to figure out where she was, Nick's voice bringing her back to reality.
"Hello? What do you want, it's our day off. What time is it? No, I'm gonna get lunch on my own today. Yeah talk to ya later. Bye."
"Who was that?" Kayla asked as Nick hung up.
"One of the guys, they're going out to eat. Sorry they woke you up."
"Don't worry about it, what time is it?"
"Almost one. You hungry."
"Not really. If you are go ahead with the guys, I'll just hang out here."
"Yeah right. Like I got you here all the way from Florida to hang out with the guys I see everyday." Kayla shrugged as Nick wrapped his arms around her again, like he were cuddling up to a teddy bear when he were a child, breathing in her scent and nuzzling his face into her neck.
The few days had turned into a week, a week full of happiness and worry. She'd be going home tomorrow, then the next day he'd be leaving for Europe and she wondered if things would be the same when he got back. Her mixed feelings of everything that went on this week constantly ran through her mind and she wondered what was behind the way Nick was acting. She had yet to meet or be introduced to anyone involved in his work life, they always went out alone, and ate alone and spent time alone. She knew he had done that with Jenna, kept her separate from the people in his life, and she liked the fact that he doted on her so much, but she couldn't handle that type of confinement and it was starting to bother her. Kayla had assumed she'd finally get to really meet the people he had told her stories about when she made the trek up here, and on the other side, she also knew she'd have to come face to face with AJ, another worry she had running in her mind, but as her time here dwindled down to it's last 24 hours, she wasn't holding out much hope of it.
"Let's go here!" Kayla said walking into a pub-like diner, the smell of cooking steak wafting through the air. They were looking for somewhere to grab a bite to eat, somewhere to sit and relax after a day spent walking around the city.
"No, let's go somewhere else Kay." He said suddenly, pulling her from the entrance of the diner.
"Why?" She asked.
"There's too many people in there, I don't want to get hung up signing autographs or anything."
"Nick there's hardly anyone in there." She said glancing around the corner. "It's two o'clock not many people go out to lunch now."
"I just don't think we should." He said anxiously, trying to coax her from going in any further, and that's when he saw them, seated back in a corner, eating and drinking and talking, all of his band mates and all of their friends and loved ones.
"Is that why you don't want to go in?" She asked, gesturing towards the corner of the room. "Because they're all here?" His silence provided her answer.
"Is there something wrong with me that I can't be in the same room with them, ever!?" She said raising her voice. He rose a hand to his own mouth, begging her to keep her voice down, infuriating her even more.
"No, of course not." He yelled as she pushed her way past him and out of the restaurant, walking away from him, down the block to the hotel. He followed her with the same quick pace she walked, calling her name and beckoning her to stop, even as she sped through the lobby of the hotel.
"Nick I won't be some secret you keep locked away from the world. You've been doing this all week." Kayla yelled as they got into the privacy of the elevator. "I'm not going to let you do that to me, I don't need to be sheltered and I won't be hidden." The elevator dinged open and she walked in a hurried huff to the hotel room.
"Would you listen to me please." He said following her down the hall and into the room.
"No Nick, that was the last straw. Don't you think they know you've been spending your time with someone, do they even know my name?" She said, knowing that they must since AJ had known about them.
"You don't understand Kayla."
"Then make me understand. I want to spend time with you too, but damnit Nick, I won't be treated like some mediocre mistress who isn't good enough for your friends to meet."
"That's not how it is."
"That's how it feels."
"I can't help it if I want to keep my work and my private life separate Jenna. It's hard for me to live if I don't, it makes me crazy." He said shutting the door behind them.
"Kayla."
"What?"
"My name is Kayla Nick, not Jenna and until that sinks into your head I don't want anything to do with your heart?" She said, turning away from him, leaving the hotel room in a huff.
"Kayla where are you going?" He yelled from the doorway of the room.
"I
don't know Nick." She said not turning around to look at him. "Just
leave me alone for a little while okay." She rounded the corner and took
the elevator downstairs, walking outside the hotel to the small cafe across
the street.
Nick sat down on the bed, wringing his hands through his hair. He was doing it again. The seclusion, the privacy, the secretiveness, everything he had done to Jenna that she hated so much. He probably should have gone after her, but he didn't know what to say, how to explain why he said Jenna's name or why he freaked out when they were going into the restaurant. He didn't know the answer. He didn't know how to explain himself. She was wrong, they knew about her, they knew her name, and they bothered him constantly to bring her with him, to bring her out so they could all meet her. Maybe that's what scared him, that they wanted to know her and that she just wouldn't be his anymore. Nick paced the hotel room, looking out the window for her, knowing he couldn't possibly see her from this height, but looking never the less.
It was three hours before she returned.
"Where have you been?" He asked worriedly as she came back into the room.
"I went out."
"Obviously." He said as she set four bags down onto the floor. "Are you still mad at me?"
"Yes."
"I'm sorry."
"Can I ask you a question Nick?"
"Yeah."
"Am I wasting my time?"
"What do you mean?"
"I spent all that time trying to figure out all the reasons you don't seem to want to give her up, why you still think about her after all this time, and I can't think of any good ones, I can't think of any reasons why there's nothing I can do to make you forget her. I try to pretend you and I have a good thing started, but sometimes....like tonight..... I wonder if I'm wasting my time waiting for you?" She got his attention and he guiltily looked up at her.
"I'm sorry Kay, I really am."
"For what?"
"Huh."
"What are you sorry for? Are you sorry that you're wasting my time or are you sorry I noticed?"
"Neither. I'm sorry I ruined this trip for you."
"You didn't ruin the trip, I just want to know.
"I'm over Jenna, I was over her the minute I kissed you."
"I don't believe you." She said solemnly.
"Kayla, I wanted you here with me this week. You're what helps me make it through the day now. You, not Jenna. When I get off the phone with you I have to fight off calling you back right away when I hear the dial tone because I miss talking to you. I hated you so much at first." Kayla looked up at him. "You were such a bitch, and after that thing with the disk I was so close to firing you." Kayla looked up at him, as if to say 'I apologized about that, leave it alone' but she said nothing and continued to listen to Nick.
"But you just didn't give up, you picked on me and confronted me with things I didn't want to hear and that's what I needed. I needed someone to kick me in the ass and listen to me at the same time and you did that for me. I don't know why I said her name, maybe because she got mad at me for doing the same thing to her, I'm not sure. But Kayla you have to believe that you are the first bright spot I've had in my life in a long time." He said with assertiveness, his hand firmly planted on her cheek. "You don't have to wait for me Kayla, because I'm here. I'm right here, right now with you. In here, and in here." He said pointing to his head and his heart.
"I don't know if I can trust in that Nick." Kayla said. "You told me that Jenna was who you still envisioned yourself with. She's all you could think about, how am I supposed to believe that's all changed?"
"Kay." He said growing quiet. "That was a long time ago, I'm different from then. Don't you see that."
"Of course I do."
"Then realize that a lot of things about me changed, including how I feel about people. You and Jenna included." Kayla sat in the familiar white chair, the one she had sat in the day she came and thought about everything he said. Nothing would give her more comfort than trusting in everything he had told her, believing in what she thought they had fully and completely, but she was wary. Jenna's proverbial ghost touched all of her insecurities, and they were hard to lose.
"Kayla." He said interrupting her train of thought. "This is your last night here, I don't want to spend it fighting." He said sitting on the bed across from her.
"Neither do I." She conceded
"Do you believe me."
"I have to believe you." She said with a hint of sadness in her voice, one he picked up on immediately. Nick pulled her from her seat and held her in the same warm embrace he had given her the day she arrived.
"I'm sorry about before, about keeping you a secret from everyone. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings." He said, his hands rubbing her back in assurance.
"Wanna go out to eat?" He said after a few minutes, desperately wanting the subject and tone of their conversation o change. "Ya know, since we missed dinner."
"Yeah" She said, even though she didn't feel very hungry. Stress and anger laid heavy in her stomach.
"Okay go get ready, I'll call around and see where a nice place to eat is."
"Okay." She said, rifling through her things and going into the bathroom . "Oh!" She said poking her head from the bathroom door. "Are we going somewhere simple, somewhere nice, or somewhere nice nice." She asked.
"Nice nice." He smiled, she nodded and went back in, shutting the door behind herself. Nick listened until he heard the shower running, and began calling the other guys, seeing who had eaten and who hadn't. By the time he heard the shower stop he had made reservations at a restaurant Howie had recommended and had called AJ & Kevin back with where and what time to be there, Brian, Howie and company had already eaten.
"We have reservations in half an hour."
"Okay." She said in a muffled voice from behind the sound of a hairdryer. "I'll be done in fifteen minutes!" Nick went about the room, opting out of a shower and just changing into something a little more formal. He looked up as the door opened and she stepped out from the bathroom.
"Ready to go?" He asked.
"Yup."
"You
look amazing." He said looking her up and down, she wore a simple white
top and a black skirt, but somehow she made it look better than anyone
had ever looked before. He watched her shrug modestly as he helped
her with her coat, grasping her hand firmly as they left their hotel room,
leaning over to inhale the intoxicating scent of her perfume as they got
into the elevator.
Kayla had been more than surprised by the appearance of Kevin and his wife as she and Nick entered the beautiful Italian restaurant, even more surprised that Nick had been the one to invite them.
"Nick you didn't have to do this." She whispered into his ear as she sat down.
"Yeah I did, I should have done it sooner." He said. Kayla simply smiled at him and sipped the wine that had been poured for her. The only bad part about the evening had come when AJ and his girlfriend arrived. Kayla knew she'd have to come face to face with him eventually, but she wasn't prepared for it, especially not tonight, after the fight they'd had. AJ pretended like he didn't even know her, but all throughout dinner she caught him looking at her with disappointment, and it took every ounce of strength she had to avoid telling the guy to 'screw off'. Now near the end of their meal as the six of them talked and finished their drinks his sly little looks were getting on her nerves. The waiter returned to clear their plates and handed Nick a white take-out bag, before he began. Nick thanked him and smiled as Kayla looked at his curiously.
"Well, it's been fun, but we'll be leaving now." he said standing up and pulling Kayla's chair out to help her up. She still wore the same confused look. "It's Kayla's last night here, forgive me if I don't want to spend it with all of you." He said to the amusement of everyone else at the table. Kayla got up with Nick, still without a clue as to what he was doing, and said goodbye to everyone, most of them telling her it had been a pleasure to finally meet her, AJ being the exception.
"Where are we going?" She finally asked as they went to retrieve their coats.
"Back to the hotel. I got us dessert." He said. "You don't mind do you." A wash of worry coming into his eyes.
"Not at all, what'd you get?" She said trying to peer into the bag, she had enjoyed the evening and meeting some of them, but the vibes she was getting from AJ had made her increasingly annoyed and she was glad to get out of there.
"Chocolate tiramisu cheesecake. They said it was the best." He said getting into the cab after her.
Nick fed Kayla a bite as they sat on the bed in the dark, his back against the headboard and Kayla laying between his legs watching old re-runs of Saved by the Bell on television, but he wasn't watching the TV, he was watching her. Her lips were still stained with a faint red color from the wine she had been drinking, her face still flush from it's effects, the light from the television making her eyes sparkle. As she savored another bite from the end of his fork a wave of sadness washed over him. Tomorrow she'd be gone, and Monday they be off to Europe for three weeks and lonely would set in again.
"What's wrong?" She said sensing his mood change and noticing the way he stared off into space.
"I was just thinking it was going to be a long few weeks."
"It'll go by quick." She said with assurance, knowing what he was talking about.
"You should come to Europe with us." He said suddenly.
"I can't."
"I know." he sighed dejectedly, they had already gone through this the day before. "I just thought I'd try one more time."
Kayla turned her head and kissed him, the sweet taste of chocolate and sugar lingering on both their lips. "I'm gonna miss you." He said as she broke from his mouth.
"I know." She said, sitting up on her knees to face him. She moved the take out container with the rest of their food to the table beside the bed and shut off the television. The darkness of the room was momentary, they quickly adjusted to it and their eyes found each other again. His hand touched her leg, rubbing the skin below her skirt and she leaned in to kiss him with a hot, slow, breathy kiss. Her lips barely hovered over his, touching them lightly and then pushing against them hard, he returned every kiss with the same intensity, the same passion, his hand rubbing the smoothness of her leg. Her heart was racing at a maddening pace as he alternated his touch from her legs to lacing his fingers through her hair, her own hands running down his neck and over his chest with each new kiss. Kayla was loosing herself in the moment, falling deeper and deeper into a pit of no return. His hands ran their way up her thigh to where her skirt met her shirt, his fingers ran along the skin between them, gently coaxing her shirt up. But when she found herself at the end of unbuttoning his shirt and moving towards the buckle of his belt she quickly shook herself back to reality.
"Wait Nick, we have to stop." She said as he kissed down her neck, her breathing labored and her voice husky. "I'm not ready for this with you yet."
"Is this because of what happened earlier?" He finally asked after a long pause, his body pulling away from hers, his breathing as heavy as her own.
"No, it has nothing to do with that." She sad with a shake of her head, her hand resting on his warm cheek. "I just don't think now's the right time."
"Okay." He said in a tone she couldn't quite place, somewhere between anger and sadness, maybe confusion. He ran a hand through his hair and leaned over to turn on the light, sitting back against the headboard and turning on the television again. Kayla sighed and got off the bed, sitting down in the chair. He's pissed, she thought, alternating her glances from the tv to him, he wouldn't even look her way. She just didn't want to take her relationship with Nick to that level tonight, she couldn't let it go any further and if she had she knew she wouldn't have been able to stop it. God knows she would have liked to have that with him, but he was leaving and she was leaving and it all seemed too rushed, like it was their last chance and she didn't want it to be that way. She just didn't expect him to get so mad about it.
They watched television in silence, neither of them laughing at the comedic prowess on the screen, neither of them uttering a sound. Nick suddenly got up from the bed without a word or a glance in her direction and went into the bathroom, firmly shutting the door behind himself. All Kayla could do was wait for him to come back, she wanted to apologize again, she wanted to smooth it over before she left, but when she heard the shower start she knew it wasn't going to happen, she'd ruined their last night together. Kayla changed out of her clothes into an old worn T-shirt and shorts and laid in the bed, turning off the TV and the light and pulling the blanket up over herself trying to force the ball that seemed lodged in her throat back down, to no avail. She didn't know how much time had passed since he went in, but she firmly shut her eyes when she heard the door open again.
"Kayla, are you awake?" He said in a whisper, she could feel him hovering over her.
"No." She said, wanting to pretend she was asleep, but unable to do it.
"Can I get in?" He asked, the gentleness returning to his voice.
"It's your hotel room." He laid down in the same vertical position as she did, his face merely inches from hers, her dark eyes averting his gaze.
"There's nothing more I'd love to do than know you that way Kayla." he sighed. "to know you inside and out. But if you want to wait, we'll wait. Sorry I was an ass about it."
"Nick, it's not that I don't want to...it's just..." She sighed.
"It's what?" He asked, rubbing her face with the tips of his fingers.
"It's just that no one expected us to become an us, especially us. I just need to know this can work first, that we aren't just doing this because I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon, and you'll be in Europe, and that we both know we're gonna miss each other."
"I understand." He said, his serious face turning up into a grin. "It's just that it was getting pretty good there for a minute."
"Sorry." She said meekly.
"Nothing a cold shower couldn't fix." He smiled, Kayla's laughter busting out despite how hard she tried to hold it back.
"This will work Kay." He said placing a kiss on both her eyelids before giving her a soft and sweet kiss on the lips, his arms hugging her tight as he held her for dear life, her body curling into his embrace. They held back sleep as long as they could, talking until almost daylight about as much as they could, knowing it would be a while before they could do it again.
Kayla sat in her apartment willing herself to open the letter Nick had sent. They had barely spoken since he got to Europe two weeks ago and all she could do was worry that she had bruised his ego, despite what he had told her before she left. He attributed the lack of phone calls to a lot of work and the time difference, but she wasn't so sure. Deep down she was somewhat relieved that calls were sparse, hearing his voice only made her miss him more, but hearing his voice was what she needed most. She had fallen hard, and it was the scariest feeling she had ever felt, to be so caught up in someone, someone she had previously thought could never be capable of any kind of relationship. Opening the letter was going to be hard, no matter what it said she'd end up in tears over it, but she had to read it.
Kayla ripped open the envelop, pulling out the sheet of wrinkly loose-leaf that was inside. She read the words written on the outside and took a deep breath to suppress her growing emotions.
Kayla,
I miss you.
Nick
She unfolded the wrinkled well worn sheet of loose-leaf. Paper that she imagined had been folded and re-folded many times and it was worn thin with repeated erasing. Kayla sat down on the couch and read his words, her heart aching over them.
(Note: Nick didn't write
this & neither did I! It's a song called "It's You" it was perfect
and it fit so beautifully and dammit this is fiction (: Hope you
don't think it's crass of me to use it!
The guy who wrote and
sings it is Tony Lucca (formerly of MMC fame) He's pretty amazing, and
