Excursions

Spend a day having fun in Kansas City! Select the excursion(s) of your choice and sit back and enjoy the fun! Select either a Full Day Excursion or two half-day excursions. Buses will transport you to your excursion destination. If you are participating in the half-day excursions, buses will bring you to a beautiful park in the heart of Kansas City, for lunch. Lunch costs will be collected at the time of registration.

Every effort will be made to accommodate your first choice. However, if there are not enough participants to meet minimum requirements or no adults (chaperones) have identified they want to participate in that excursion, your next choice will be considered. Full Day Excursions

A-1 Oceans of Fun

Who needs a trip to the coast when Kansas City has Oceans of Fun? With over 60 acres of wet and wild adventure, there is no need to travel anywhere else. Pack up your shades and sunscreen and head out to enjoy a million gallons of refreshment in the Surf City Wave Pool. Take a relaxing float along the Caribbean Cooler or challenge the storm of the Hurricane Falls raft ride. You can have a blast in Crocodile Isle, complete with mini water slides, spray cannons and Captain Kidd's pirate ship. Not to mention the numerous huge twisting turning water slides. There is also a new attraction being added to the water park, Paradise Falls. Oceans of Fun is the place to be for summer sun.

Want to try canoeing for the first time in a beautiful setting, or brush up on your paddling skills? Here's an opportunity to play for the day on Shawnee Mission Lake under the guidance of a certified Flat Water Trainer/Instructor. After getting acquainted, doing some warm-ups, and assessing or reviewing basic skills, we'll tour the lake, have a GREAT picnic lunch, and play some creative canoe games! A simple swim test will be required of all participants. PFD's, boats, and paddles will be provided by Girl Scouts of Mid-Continent Council. Swimming attire would include: swim top, quick-dry shorts/pants, shirt for cover-up if needed, sunscreen, and a beach towel. Limited to 16 girls.

B-1 Kansas Speedway

Would you like to see where Jeff Gordon won the NASCAR Busch Series and the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in 2002? This is your stop! This new racetrack features a 1.5 mile tri-oval suitable for all types of racing. It currently seats 80,187 spectators in the grandstands and plans are underway to expand seating to 150,000. Enjoy a tour of this magnificent track. You will visit: President's Suite Suite Roof/Spotter's Stand, Infield Garage, Fan Walk/Inspection Station, Autograph Alley, and Gatorade Victory Lane.

 

B-2 Kansas City Zoo

The Kansas City Zoo is a great adventure. Whether you are there for an afternoon getaway, or a full day's adventure, 200-acres are packed with all different kinds of animals. Attractions include camel rides and 7 different continents filled with fun and exciting creatures. Within the main building there is an IMAX Theater with shows daily. The IMAX experience features a spectacular 6 1/2 story screen with 12,000 watts of digital sound. An extra fee will be charged if you would like to see a film. Where the peacocks run free and the adventures are great, this is the Kansas City Zoo.

 

B-3 Liberty Memorial

The Liberty Memorial is one of Kansas City's most recognizable landmarks. It is the only major memorial and museum in the United States dedicated to World War I. Silent and dramatic, a restored Liberty Memorial again stands proud. In a burst of spirit, Kansas Citians gave their nickels, dimes and dollars to build the monument in 1926. Decades later, they arose again to preserve Liberty for future generations. Enjoy the dual museums dedicated to memorabilia from this World War. The Liberty Memorial is definitely a sight to see while in Kansas City.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City is one of the country's premier art institutions. Its rich collections bring together masterpieces from every culture and period of the world, spanning over 5,000 years. The Nelson-Atkins has prestigious collections of European and American art, and known above all for its magnificent collection of Asian art, notably the arts of China. The Museum is also home to outstanding collections of ancient art, decorative arts, African art, and American Indian art. B-5 Steamboat Arabia

B-6 Toy and Miniature Museum

The Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City was founded in 1982 by two Kansas Citians - Mary Harris Francis and Barbara Marshall. The museum contains twenty-four rooms filled with antique dolls, dolls' houses, cast iron toys, trains, and scale miniatures. You can see antiques of all shapes and sizes. From miniature dolls, to miniature cars; the things you see will definitely impress you.

Visit President Truman's Victorian mansion built in 1885 which served as the summer White House during the Truman administration and Truman's home from 1919 until his death in 1972. There will be two special exhibits there during the summer of 2004: Beyond Lewis and Clark: American Exploration in the Years Following the Corps of Discovery, and American Portraits by Enit Kaufman.

The AMC 20 theatre is located in Overland Park, Kansas which is a short drive from the Kansas City area. It is one of Overland Park's nicest movie complexes with 20 different theaters inside, all with stadium seating. Girls will vote on movie(s) upon arrival depending on what is showing at appropriate times. Depending on the number of adults, there may be more than one movie choice. AMC 20 is located in a shopping plaza - if time permits, you may be able to do some quick shopping.

C-5 Pepsi Ice Midwest

This playground for ice skaters has two ice rinks as well as a physical fitness center. You can rent skates there for a good price so you don't have to tote your own pair around. There is a public skate session from 10:00 in the morning until 4:00 in the evening. This facility is used to train the top figure skaters and hockey teams in the Kansas City area.

 

C-6 Union Station/Science City

After sitting dormant for years, Kansas City's Union Station, the second largest rail station in the USA, re-opened in November 1999. Union Station was built in 1914. As a working train station, it was the nation's largest Railway Express Building and a powerhouse that provided steam and power to operate the Station. It is now home to several unique restaurants, theaters, traveling exhibits, special events and a science center called Science City, which is fun-for-the-whole family.
