MSST 91105
MARITIME SAFETY & SECURITY TEAM

COAST GUARD ISLAND, ALAMEDA, CA
Semper Paratus
[Original crew PLANK OWNER coin] [MSST commemorative unit coin]

Only 120 "PLANK OWNER" Coins were ever produced, which commemorate the founding members of the unit. Jelcick aquired the mold from the company contracted to produce these coins to insure that no more PLANK OWNER coins will ever be produced.

In addition to the PLANK OWNER COIN, a limited edition of 130 coins of the same design, but without the words "PLANK OWNER" were produced at the same time back in 2003.

This specialized MSST unit is trained in anti-terrorism force protection and can respond to terrorism threats anywhere within the United States at a moments notice.
They are located on Coast Guard Island, in the San Francisco Bay. Just one small part of the Department of Homeland Defense, there are a number of units just like this one located throughout the U.S. working in conjunction with the FBI and other federal and DOD agencies serving to protect this country against those who seek to deter democracy and freedom in this country and around the world.
MSST 91105 was commissioned in December 2003.

The serpent or dragon side of the coin, representing MSST-91105, was created by Terry Jelcick while he was assigned to the MSST unit in Alameda, California.
These coins, created as a token of appreciation and pride, signify the formation of this historically significant unit of the United States Coast Guard. The shield side of the coin shows the Coast Guard's MSST logo, representing MSST units throughout the United States.

Jelcick also designed the Coast Guard Port Security Unit (PSU) Insignia while he was serving with a PSU unit in Dammam, Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, under the command and by the request of, Captain David Powell.
The MSST dragon is a morph of the regal little seahorse character he designed as part of the unit logo, which is now an integral part of the PSU insignia. The serpent design developed as a direct result of the attacks on New York and the Pentagon. Think of it as the seahorse morphing or mutating into the dragon in much the same way the Hulk is transformed when pissed. A force to be reckoned with, both the PSU and MSST units were born of necessity.

Jelcick has been creating T-shirt designs, unit patches and other art for the military units he's been assigned which began in the Navy more than forty years ago in the summer of 1966 in the height of the Vietnam War. He is now retired from the United States Coast Guard. His last tour of duty was ironically to be served in a Naval Command, Naval Coastal Warfare Group One, an Expeditionary Warfare Command, bringing his military career full circle. He currently resides with his wife, Karen, in Soquel, California.
