Devilishly Clever Trigger Mod |
(For Pirahnas or Rebels) By juxstapo |
This will work on any mechanical trigger with a wraparound frame, but for the purpose of this article, we'll look at my Rebel. To begin with, cock the gun, (whilst unloaded and gassless), and gently squeeze the trigger, without firing it. Note how far the trigger travels before it engages, before it hits the sear and you feel resistance, this is your foreward play, mark where the tip of the trigger is at whilst squeezed-but-not-shot on the frame with a pencil. Now hold the cocking knob to keep tension on the firing assembly and gently squeeze the trigger until it releases, note the point at which the trigger pushes the sear down, or the point at which the trigger "breaks". Notice also how much travel the trigger has after the break, you will be eliminating this also. Note: There are many ways to shim a trigger like this, such as glue and plastic, but I chose the method that I felt looked the most "professional". |
Drill two holes in the trigger frame, one behind the trigger and the other directly in front of the pencil mark you made. (See pic). Tap the holes with a fine threaded tap, (they run about $4.00 at your local hardware store, size match it to the drill bit you'll be using and be sure to get fine threaded.) Here again, you may use multiple techniques to accomplish this next part, but I purchased two small hex-headed set screws, ($.10 each), and installed in the holes. (Be sure to size and thread match the set screws to your hole and tap, duh). Run the front screw in untill it holds the trigger right at the pencil |
mark. Run the rearmost screw in until the trigger hits it right *behind* the breaking point. You don't want the screw set directly on the breaking point because it tends to make the sear fail to disengage on a fast string of shots. With the screws set like this I got about a 5 ball per second increase in firing speed, but I'm sure someone with a good trigger finger would get more. One of the disadvantages to this mod is it really wants an agitated hopper, which I don't have. So, go show off to all your friends your new drilled, tapped, fast trigger frame. |
