Brass Eagle's Red Dot Sight:
Although I'm not a major acolyte of cheap optics, I have to say this one "caught my eye", so to speak.
Red dots function under the same principle as heads up displays, with the dot superimposed over your field of vision. This is occomplished by looking through the site with one eye while keeping the other eye open and focused on your target or your surroundings.
Pic too grainy, and dot is way out of focus,  but this is a rough idea of the sight in action
It takes some personal training to learn not to focus on the dot itself. I earned myself a decent headache before I learned to not stare at it.
The sight itself is encased in relatively sturdy ABS plastic. Its solid enough to take an average paintball hit, and I was able to trip, slip, slide, and fall through heavy wooded terrain without damaging it. (Although I wouldn't drop it on concrete or dunk it in water and expect it to funtion at 100% capacity). The mount is a standard 3/8" metal dovetail which,
on a tinkerer's note, can be removed
for use elsewhere. This was interesting to me because mounting equipment is very difficult to find around here.
The dot itself is very easy to see under any lighting conditions, and of course its much sharper than the picture. I recommend holding the marker so the sight is somewhat closer to your eye, this makes it easier to preform the dual focus trick, and the farther away you hold the sight the larger the dot appears, making quick target aquisition difficult. Zeroing the sight is no more or less difficult than any other, and it holds a zero admirable considering the unstable scratch built mount I had it on. The battery is front mounted, right under the retical aperture. This is one of the design flaws, the battery is not covered. I haven't seen any evidence that it would come out easily but I would feel better if it had a cap on it. Still, at $13.95 retail, this little sucker is quite a nifty weekend toy.
