This is the second section of my website, which focuses solely on the different treatments currently available for Vitiligo. There are many treatment options someone with Vitiligo can take, including medical therapies, surgical therapies, and other less-drastic options that serve to temporarily cover up spots. Each different treatment will have its own webpage, as I will try to include as much information as I can find for each one. This applies only to the more common and popular treatments, however, such as re- pigmentation, depigmentation, grafting, etc. Newer and experimental treatments, such as autologous melanocyte transplants and micropig- mentation (tattooing), will be mentioned briefly, and will not have their own separate pages. Please note that the repigmentation methods are not total, permanent cures. Each treatment is carried out over a long period of time--ranging from 6 to 18 months. Usually it takes at least 3 to 6 months before you can see results from any treatment. Also, results are not always guaranteed, as each patient responds differently to therapy. In other words, a certain treatment may not work for everyone. And then, sometimes the best treatment is no treatment at all. If you are fair-skinned, chances are the Vitiligo spots are barely noticeable. Just avoid tanning to make sure the pigmented skin (which will tan) does not become darker than the non-pigmented skin (which will tan slowly, if at all). White skin affected by Vitiligo is very easily sunburned. Be sure to wear a SPF of at least 15 whenever you're out in the sun. One more thing. Talking to others about your condition is a great way to feel more comfortable and confident in your own skin. Counseling and support groups are great ways to meet others with Vitiligo. By talking about it, it will become easier to cope with this condition. Hopefully all this will educate you on the different options you have and can take. And if you don't have Vitiligo, but are still reading this, good for you! :-) These pages will also show you a glimpse of what dermatologists deal with. |
