Summary: After the recap, Cobra hits the building they were using as their test subject and blows it up real good.
Hawk gives the Joes a pep-talk about how they have to shut down Cobra before they have a chance to recharge their sonic weapon.
Rock n’ Roll radios Scarlet and Snake-eyes, telling them to come along and bring super sonic fighter packs along with them.
Cobra fires on a group of Joes coming in by Battle Copter (the little gyro-copter single pilot flying thingies). Scarlet, Psyche-Out, Rock n’ Roll and Snake-eyes go by subway and use guitars to create their own sonic energy to cancel out Cobra’s sonic weapon.
Psyche-Out is also a Billy Blaster fan. The song Billy is playing as part of Cobra’s sonic weapon is one of his favorites.
Hawk delivers the word over the radio that the Mayor of New York City has decided to cave in to Cobra’s demands. The Joes are to pull back and end the fight. Scarlett and the others keep going after ‘accidentally’ disabling their radio.
Skymate crashes into the Cobra base, passing out in an elevator.
Cobra spots the train the Joes are on and changes their frequency in order to burn out the Joes’ super sonic fighter packs. Billy’s ‘killer bass’ destroys the tunnel, but oddly enough does no physical damage to the Joes or their eardrums. One would think that the human eardrum would be a lot more fragile than the reinforced concrete and steel of the tunnel, but one would be thinking wrong. At least in this case.
The Joes manage to escape before the train crashes. Cobra assumes they’re dead and that all they have to do now is wait for their money to be delivered. ‘Course, we know it’s just not that simple, don’t we?
The Joes find themselves in the basement of the Extensive Enterprises building, the building Cobra is using as their sonic headquarters. What a bit of luck!
Cobra’s test was convincing enough that the money is being delivered to them via a bike messenger carrying ten billion dollars in cash stacked up in a cart attached to the back of the bike. Metal-Head still wants to blow up NYC. Cobra Commander says that he has every intention of blowing up the city, but that Metal-Head’s not going to be the one to do it. When questioned about his reversal, CC explains that he lied.
The Joes find Road Pig’s zoo. Road Pig and a Range Viper are chasing a warthog on motorcycles. Err… Road Pig and the Range Viper are on the cycles, that is. Road Pig lassoes the warthog and gets yanked off the bike. He calls for the Range Viper to help him as he’s dragged along by the warthog.
The Joes, who’ve been hiding, end up surprised by an extremely big snake identified as a python. The python snatches Rock n’ Roll and Scarlett without much of a fight from either of them. I’d make some remark about it being rather sexist that Scarlet’s only reaction to being caught is to scream and allow herself to be dragged off, but really, Rock n’ Roll and the other Joes don’t exactly come off as macho manly guys at this point either.
The Joes get dragged into a conveniently placed pool of water by the snake. A nearly crocodile crawls into the water as well to help the python tag-team on the Joes. Skymate shows up and catches Road Pig and the Range Viper in a simple noose trap.
Snake-eyes catches the croc around the mouth with his legs, holding it shut (which actually makes sense since it’s easier for a croc to close it’s mouth than it is for it to open it). Having gotten loose from the snake, the other Joes help Snake-eyes fight the croc.
Cobra watches as the bike messenger shows up. Oddly enough, the money hasn’t blown out of the back of the cart and the messenger wasn’t attacked by any of a number of opportunists who might sell out NYC for the chance to grab fat stacks of free cash as it cycles by.
Metal-head still wants to blow up the city. Billy Blaster is nowhere to be found so Cobra Commander relents and lets Metal-Head do it. Which he quickly regrets since Metal-Head jumps up and gives CC a huge bear hug, tackling him to the ground.
Cobra Commander and Major Bludd get chased off by a croc that comes out of the elevator. The Joes have apparently sent it up there to serve as a distraction while they try to stop Cobra and find Billy.
Metal-Head has tied Billy up and locked him in a closet. Taking Billy’s guitar, he heads off to destroy NYC.
By now, Billy’s finally figured out that he was conned. The Joes show up and rescue him from the closet and he agrees to help them take Cobra down.
Metal-Head and a pair of Vipers start rocking out. For some reason they have smoke machines and light effects and everything. Metal-Head, says Major Bludd, may have a tin ear but he does have a talent for destruction.
The Joes wire themselves into Cobra’s sound system, using their own guitars to once again counter Cobra’s rock and roll. Rock n’ Roll and Billy Blaster fight back using their guitars while the other Joes knock out Cobra’s sound dishes. Rock n’ Roll and Billy’s music then knocks out Cobra’s sound system and shorts out Metal-Head’s guitar.
The building begins to fall apart, being shook apart by the effects of the music. Again, no one seems to be suffering any physical ill effects. The croc, at least, makes it out safe though.
The Joes escape, the Cobras escape and the money rains down. Rock n’ Roll asks Hawk what he thinks of sonic weapons now.
“What else can I say, but long live rock and roll!” Hawk says. And the episode ends.
Commentary: Once again, mad props must go out to Propadeutic for his incredibly informative site. If it wasn’t for him, I’d still be thinking that the Super Sonic Fighters were just some cheesy throwaway idea that the DiC writers came up with for this episode.
As it turns out, the Sonic fighters were a real special unit of Joe characters introduced in 1991. They were “A small unit of Joes recently trained in the latest high-tech equipment, assigned to counter Cobra’s use of portable sonic weapons.” Falcon was their leader, and Dial-Tone, Dodger, Law, Tunnel Rat, Psyche-Out, Rock n’ Roll and Zap made up the rest of the team.
Their Cobra counterparts were led by Major Bludd and included Lamprey, Road Pig and a Viper. Which explains why Bludd and Road Pig were in this episode, though it doesn’t give any clue as to why Road Pig has a menagerie.
