A Case Study in Correlations for Solar Induced Earthquakes

On July 16 &17, 2004

1. "When Bz is south, that is, opposite Earth's magnetic field, the two fields link up," explains Christopher Russell, a Professor of Geophysics and Space Physics at UCLA. "You can then follow a field line from Earth directly into the solar wind" -- or from the solar wind to Earth. South-pointing Bz's open a door through which energy from the solar wind can reach Earth's atmosphere!

2. On July 16th and 17th the shifts in the sun’s magnetic field due to very strong solar eruptions during the days prior caused the earth’s magnetic field to abnormally point south. Observe Row Five and the transition from July 16 to July 17 UTC:  This occurred as the moon came into general alignment between the earth and sun during the month.

3. The disruption was recorded by a chain of magnometers in northern North America.

5. The disruption was first recorded in Resolute Bay, then in Yellowknife, Canada and then in Alaska traveling east to west as the earth rotated eastward under this crack in the earth’s protective magnetosphere.

6. During this time of disruption there were two earthquakes above 4 in magnitude, recorded as the larger orange squares on this map by the USGS. The first in the Yukon Territory of Canada and the second in the Kodiak Island area of Alaska likewise from east to west.

7. The USGS Information Center reported the quakes as follows:
