COMMANDMENTS OF THE
KINGDOM - 3
7. It is lawful to
do good on
the Sabbath
After the death of our Lord Jesus Christ "the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and
they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and
prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment." (Lk. 23:55-56) Here is clear evidence the disciples of Jesus Christ
continued to keep the Seventh Day Sabbath commandment after the Lord's
death. It also proves the Seventh Day Sabbath was not abolished and
nailed to the cross as some falsely teach. The Fourth Commandment states:
"Remember the Sabbath
day, to keep it holy. . . ." (Ex.
20:8-11)
Our Lord Jesus Christ had attended public religious services on the Seventh Day
Sabbath throughout His earthly life (Lk. 4:16, 31) He had encountered much
opposition from the Pharisees concerning the way that He and His disciples had
kept the Sabbath. (Mt. 12:1-8) During one Sabbath day Jesus had healed a
man with a withered hand. When the Pharisees questioned
Him, 'Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?' He replied, "What man is there among you who has one sheep, and
if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it
out? Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.'
Then He said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' And he stretched it
out, and it was restored as whole as the other." (Mt. 12:9-13) Doing good
is the principle of Sabbath observance in the Kingdom of God. The Early Apostolic Church had kept the Sabbath (Acts 134:42-44; 15:21; 16:13; 17:2;
18:4)
There is not a single verse in the Bible that indicates the Seventh Day Sabbath
had ever been abolished. It was institued by
God when He created the universe. (Gen. 2:1-3) It will continue into the
new heavens and new earth. "From
one Sabbath to another, all flesh shall come to worship before Me, says the LORD." (Isa.
66:22-23) The Kingdom of God began during our Lord Jesus Christ's First Advent and it
will continue after His Second Advent. The Seventh Day Sabbath and the Kingdom of God will go hand in hand into eternity.
