MRE is in some ways an offshoot of my earlier "FaLoR" system. But whereas FaLoR was an attempt to combine elements of S. John Ross' Risus and Jared A. Sorensen's octaNe with MRE I wanted to create a gaming system that was just simple, non-crunchy, and generic enough to be easily adapted to many genres or styles of play. The result is a relatively standard "Attribute + Ability + dice" mechanic with a relatively coarsely grained scale.
One day I envision creating several modules for this system to encourage specific genres incuding: a "bog-standard" fantasy setting, a fae/changeling style modern game, a neolithic game, and a comprehensive furries game (covering all possabilities from Watership Down to TMNT to Wind in the Willows). So far all that's available is the embryonic beginnings of a mage-like game, originally to be entitled "Reality Deviant", but probably now called something related to Enlightenment.
When I get around to writing up a License the core rules for the Microcosm Roleplaying Engine will officially be designated as Open Game Content. For now they are unofficially Open Game Content. If you really like them feel free to use them as the basis for your own game, just please let me know, I'd like to see how it worked out.
I also haven't had a chance to PDF the rules yet, but in Rich Text Format here are the files:
Core Rules - These also include some extra rules for messing around with the attributes and such.
