To check files on the fly without keeping your virus scanner loaded (and taking up valuable memory) place a shortcut to your virus scanning program in your "SendTo" menu.  Click on the Start Menu, select Run, type SendTo, and hit enter.  Then copy (or create) a new short cut to your virus scanning program in that folder.  What a resource saver!
