(NATIVE RAPPER) TO PERFORM AT CONCERT FOR PELTIER AND OGLALA NATIONAL HEALING & PELTIER DEFENSE COMMITTEE MEMBERS TO SPEAK. OGLALA SD - The Lakota Student Alliance and Oglala Commemoration Committee in collaboration with Sage Talent Management are proud to present native hip-hop artist Julian B. to headline the 4th annual Commemorative Concert portion of the event held June 26, 2003 in Oglala SD. Julian B. is a Muscogee native from northeast Oklahoma whose rap music focuses on today's native life and the effects of colonialism. Julian B was recently nominated to the 2002 Native American Music Awards (NAMA) for Best Hip Hop Artist category. Julian B's first album "Once Upon A Genocide" was released in 1994, and his most recent "Injunuity" album was release this year. In previous years, Julian B. has shared the stage with the likes of mainstream recording artists Public Enemy, Sugar Hill gang, Tom Bee of XIT (Native musician) and hung out with Rage Against the Machine & Fugazi, contemporary musicians which many of our Lakota youth are familiary with. Joining Julian B. and other performers and speakers are: members of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee Board of Directors and Staff persons to give us updates and share information with the Oglala Lakota youth and elders regarding political Prisoner Leonard Peltier. Peltier is currently in lockdown in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary where he is serving 2 life sentences for the deaths of 2 FBI agents following a shootout in Oglala on June 26, 1975. AIM member Joseph Stuntz was also found dead at the scene. Traditional Drum Group Elk Nation will be leading the concert-goers with Honorings for the victims of the Reign of Terror and support for the Oglala Commemorative Event. Elk Nation is from the Oglala Community and are the children of (now deceased) Billy Good Voice, AIM supporter and Spiritual advisor who conducted the burials for Reign of Terror victim Jim Little, Anna Mae Aquash, & Joe Stuntz. Julian B and Elk Nation will be among those sharing the stage with Oglala Lakota Rock (& NAMA nominee) Steel River, 2001 NAMA winner Wayquay, Seattle folk singer Jim Page, Pine Ridge rockers SpyderZback, Wounded Knee hiphop artist Storm, and more as they arrive. Join us as we hear words by Vernon Bellecourt - AIM National spokesperson, Bruce Ellison- Peltier’s attorney, Tom Cook - Slim Buttes Land Association, Thomas Dockstader - Leonard Peltier Defense Committee Board Chair, Tony Black Feather -Teton Sioux National Treaty Council, Russell Blacksmith - Youth Movitional Speaker, Sandy Flye & LaCreek Civil Rights Committee, Tom Poor Bear - Camp Justice, Leland Little Dog - Sicangu Treaty Law Society and much more. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JAN 31, 2003 Information Contact: Oglala Commemoration Committee web: www.oocities.org/oglala_commemoration email: oglala_commemoration@yahoo.com 4TH ANNUAL AWARENESS EVENT FOR POLITICAL PRISONER LEONARD PELTIER SCHEDULED FOR JUNE ON PINE RIDGE RESERVATION. OGLALA SD - The 4th Commemorative Event is scheduled for June 26, 2003 (Thurs) at the in Oglala SD on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. (Known as the Oglala Lakota Nation.) The Lakota Student Alliance and Kansas City AIM Support Group jointly sponsor the annual event to honor and remember the lives lost during the 1970s Civil War on the Reservation and to also raise awareness toward the unjust imprisonment of AIM member Leonard Peltier whose incarceration resulted from a Shootout incident between AIM members and Federal police agents at Oglala 28 years ago. It is also an event which promotes reconciliation and healing for the 1970s events with emphasis on alternatives or restorative justice. Activities begin with a Spiritual Ceremony conducted at the Gravesites of Joe Stuntz, Anna Mae Aquash, and Jun Little; A memorial walk ends at the Jumping Bull Property; a Community Dinner and a Concert commences at the Loneman School in Oglala. This years event celebrates the wonderful accomplishments of Lakota Youth and also honors the past heroes of contemporary such as Buddy Lamont, Pedro Bisonnette, Anna Mae Aquash, Joe Stuntz, Jun Little, Nilak Butler and Standing Deer. Musical Guests include Anishnabe Artist Wayquay; Lakota Rockers Steel River Band; Folk Singer Jim Page; Oglala Hiphopper Storm; Southern Cheyenne Singer JD Nash, Spyderzback of Pine Ridge and more performers as they arrive. Speakers at this event will include distinguished characters who played a vital role in the justice movement for Leonard Peltier: Bruce Ellison, Peltier Attorney for 26 years from Rapid City will discuss Globalization as well as and update us about Leonards case; Vernon Bellecourt , AIM (American Indian Movement) Spokesman from Minneapolis MN will discuss Racism in Sports and Media; Tom Cook, Mohawk Founding Editor of former Akwesasne Notes and Founding member of Slim Buttes Land Association will speak about many uses of Hemp As An Alternative Energy; and members of the Lacreek Civil Rights Association will discuss the many wonderful accomplishments they made this past year. Other speakers include Russell Blacksmith of the Lakota Student Alliance who was recently inducted into the National Congress of American Indians Youth Board; And Tom Poor Bear updating us on the Progress of Camp Justice. More Speakers will be added to the roster as we near the fourth Annual event. We invite all concerned people to come join us this very historic day to celebrate and share. ### |
