| In late 1966 and early 1967 US Navy K-9,
Da Nang commenced. The Kennels at China Beach were ready and waiting
upon arrival of the dogs and handlers from Lackland. Initially the
handlers though stayed in hooches within the USMC 5th Communications Battalion
Compound. Later we were transferred to our permanent home at
Camp Carter, which was also the home for Da Nang East Security.
Camp Carter was named in honor of Merle Keith Carter, the first Navy K-9
handler to be killed in Viet Nam.
The dogs primary mission was of course mostly fenceline patrol at the Sites mentioned in The Posts. There were also secondary missions of jeep patrol, narcotics detection, the demonstration team, Water Dogs, etc. They were: |
