Another highly popular edition of the movie, handled with enormous care by the Dutch Filmworks label. This is freely available on the Net, so it's value isn't really an issue yet. However, it was a must-have for fans when it came out, and is still one of the finest editions of the film, even after the long-awaited American DVD. Includes glimpse of the disembowelment, as well as the chest-carving sequence. Has no end credits.

Picture

This is where the disc succeeds - the transfer is pleasantly sharp and clear, with only the odd incident of scratches or technical goofs. It is quite simply, one of the finest-looking releases of the film ever, and even rivals that of the American disc. The film never looked this good before this edition of the movie, and is truly light years ahead of all the past videos. If there is one problem, the color could have been richer and more vibrant, but this isn't a big deal. Brilliant.

Sound

Not just plain old mono that we got before, but Dolby Digital Mono - a distinct and highly pleasing improvement. It isn't as good in the sound department as the French DVD, but the audio is still greater than what came before it. There is only about two instances when the sound is muffled, and the music sounds outstanding - almost as good as the soundtrack CD. Very pleasing indeed.

Extra Material

With the American DVD on release, this is nowhere near that interesting, but is worth more of a peek than it's French opposition. Fans will find some joy in skipping through the still gallery (which is surprisingly excellent quality), which includes a few pictures which were previously unseen before this release. The only other extra worth mentioning, is the theatrical trailer, which actually raises a few laughs in terms of cheesy voice-overs. The remaining extras are in Dutch text, though there's specal thanks to Dutch Filmworks for making the subtitles optional.

Overall

A mostly outstanding edition, that could have done with some better bonus material. Brilliant sound and picture quality make this a very pleasing release. And, of course, it will play on British DVD players. Excellent!
