This text refers to the American video released by MGM in 1999. Check-out Amazon and Ebay. Price: $9.94 Rated: R Format: NTSC (America and Canada) Approximate Run Time: 83 mins (NTSC speed) Released by: MGM Movie Time Sound: Mono This is currently the best video version of the film around, though it is extremely cut. The disembowelment and some of Phyllis's stabbing is left out, the chest-carving is completely missing, and the scene where Phyllis faces Weasel from across the river is also missing. However, there is a little more dialogue than the European versions, when the gang's vehicle brakes down. The end credits are also present. Fans treated this release with a bitter reception concerning the cuts, though were pleased with MGM's ability to provide a decent transfer quality. MGM have now released the far superior DVD (the longest print around), though this is pretty much obselete at the time of writing. Collector's should note that the release comes in a collectable card box, in which the video slides into from the bottom. This is the only welcome difference to other releases. |
Picture This was the first (and last) video version of the film to have a Digital Super-Scan. This makes the quality of the video much greater, and it certainly surpasses past editions. However, it still shows much more of the grain and technical problems from the production, which DVD helps to mask. The best picture quality on a 'Last House' video yet - though this is the edition's only joy. Sound The usual bout of mono sound, this is OK, though the picture is actually better. It is hard to hear some of the dialogue as well as incidental sound effects, and the music could have been clearer. All in all, this aspect is a disappointment. Overall Despite having a pleasing picture quality for a 'Last House' video, this edition is highly cut, and the US DVD has now received all the restored footage. The sound isn't brilliant either. Get a European release or the MGM DVD instead. |
