As many fans, and those interested know, a lot of footage from Last House on the Left has still yet to surface, and lost footage that has been found cannot be reinserted, due to the loss of original production sound. Over the years, alternative takes and scenes have cropped up, some of which released, though there are still thought to be elements missing. The most complete edition of the film released, to date, is the American DVD, which included a lot of this “lost footage” in it’s bonus materials. But, as many know, we don’t have access to everything... |
The Infamous Disembowelment* *as seen on the US DVD Arguably the most talked about, and shocking death in the film, involves Phyllis’s disembowelment, which over the years has appeared either briefly or not at all. ALL of the footage for this disgusting segment has surfaced on the American DVD, though most of it is confined to the bonus materials - due to the loss of production sound. During the film itself, a strong indication of this sequence is still present. The full footage is unflinchingly gory, and depicts the criminal gang taking turns at wounding the poor girl. This segment is also partially seen in the Dutch and French copies. |
The Conversation* *as seen on the US DVD While nothing spectacular (mainly because we don’t have audio), a conversation between Dr and Mrs Collingwood was cut, and recently discovered, and occurred in the Collingwood character bedroom. It is highly likely a discussion involving the absence of their daughter in the story. Available on the US release, but not currently included on any other edition. Discovering Mari This alternative take is presumed lost now, and depicts the character Mari being found by her parents, while still alive. Before she dies in her mother’s arms, Mari manages to give away the identities of her killers. No released or available print of the film has this take, though it was definitely filmed, and exists. It was rumoured to have been included in an early exhibition of the picture in Britain, before it’s ban there. It is doubtful that the footage would still have sound. Not available in any form. |
Junior's Death* There was originally a more violent end to Junior, with this close-up of the back of his skull, after his bullet-biting suicide. Specially created by the effects crew, this shot isn't used within the film, and hasn't been seen on many editions. On all available releases, this death merely ends with Junior's body sliding down the wall, with a splatter of blood behind him. |
