Matthew Alexander Eason
Wilkinson, M.D. F.R.C.P.,
b 09 OCT 1813 St Peters, Manchester,
Lancashire d 26 JUL 1878
Lancashire; Prominent Physician at
Manchester Royal Infirmary in the UK
, and shortly before his death
President of the British Medical
Association. He was also Lord of the
Manor of Dringhouses which is near
to York. Reading his address to the
British Medical Association of 11
Aug 1877, I can see that he is in
the reformer mode of Nightingale,
quoting her, and very much concerned
about sanitation and reform.
Manor had come down through a
long line of Barlows from Humphrey
Barlow 1596 -1634 of Sheffield, and
the last Barlow incumbent John
Barlow d. 1813 had married Frances
Bayley 1784 - 1863 who was from a
rather eminent Manchester family.
Their only daughter Frances Barlow
1807 - 1852 therefore inhereted the
title which passed to her first
husband, Edward Trafford Leigh 1801
- 1847, and after his death as there
were no children, she married
Matthew A E Wilkinson in 1851 so it
passed to him. The marriage didn't
last long as she died in 1852, and
Matthew married Louisa Laetitia
Walker 1823 - 1889, in 1854, who
from the evidence was already in the
family circle before Frances's
death. The manor passed to their son
George Alexander Eason Wilkinson
1860 - 1941 after the death of his
father. |
