Gloria focused her direction onto women’s rights, when she realized that her mother’s illness was never taken seriously because she was a woman. Thereafter, she was determined to address women’s concerns and emerged as an activist for women’s rights.  In addition, a personal circumstance in her early life also contributed to her present status in fighting for and educating women on their reproductive rights. During her college years, she became engaged and later pregnant, but broke off the engagement in hopes of pursing her education.  At this time she tormented over her situation and realized she was not ready for marriage or motherhood. At the time, abortions were illegal in the United States and England, yet through a friend she discovered a doctor in England would be willing to deem the pregnancy a “health risk” and perform the operation. Her guilt over choosing the procedure kept her from speaking about it for fifteen years
