The Curies discovered and studied radioactive substances. Once tested on humans, radioactive substances were found to be helpful to cancer sufferers.  The Curies invented Curietherapy (now radiotherapy).

By 1903 Marie had graduated her doctorate and, the same year, the Curies shared the Nobel Prize for physics.   About two years later Pierre was involved in an accident that caused his death, leaving Marie to care for her two children. In 1911, Marie received the Nobel Prize for chemistry.
