Oprah Gail Winfrey was born to unmarried teenage
parents in Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29, 1954. Already Oprah had a
stack of obstacles ahead of her as a baby. Her parents were unmarried
teenagers, she was female, she was black and she was very poor. Oprah
spent her first six years of childhood being raised on a Mississippi farm
by her religious grandmother. She taught Oprah to read and write by a
young age. At three Oprah had begun her public speaking career reciting
sermons in church.
