At nineteen, Oprah became a part-time reporter for a
radio station in Nashville. To pursue a career in radio and television she
also began studying speech and preforming arts at Tennessee State
University. In 1972 Oprah become an anchor at Nashville’s WTVF-TV. She
was the first black woman to hold this position. Four years later Oprah
moved to WJZ-TV and after a stint as a reporter she was promoted to
co-anchor. Oprah hosed a show called People are talking. This was a
big hit and remained so for eight years. In 1984 Oprah took a major
risk and accepted a job hosting a Chicago morning talk
show. This show was competing against the extremely popular Phil
Donahue Show. Soon after Oprah’s warm-hearted way earned her first
place in the ratings. In 1986 Oprah began the Oprah Winfrey Show.
