Say I Will, Not I Should
From The Straits Times Every day of our lives, we will most probably use words to express our thoughts. Yet most of us are not aware of how thoughtlessly we use them. Words can make or break you. They are the software that runs the computer which we call the brain. Like any good computer, our brain runs on a binary system; it only understands and processes clear commands such as "yes", "no", "I will do" and "I won't do". You have to know how your brain works to understand that "hoping" is not the same as getting the result that you desire. When you say: "I hope I will pass the test", what have you ordered the computer to do ? Have you given your brain a clear command to do all it can possibly do to get you through the examination? No! You have given it a vague direction at best, and still there are doubts about whether you are able to pass. And should you really fail, your brain will start looking for possible excuses, such as "Well, I really tried, but I guess that was not my day.." Have you ever heard any successful person saying: "I hope, I try, I wish, I could, I should, I would"? Hardly. The only currency they know is "I will, I do, I can .." The next time you are tempted to use words like hope, try, could, and would think what the motivation guru Tony Robbins once said: "Most people SHOULD all over them", referring to most people's tendency to muddle through their lives by saying "I should" instead of "I will". So, stop living your lives in terms of such conditionals and live it with the certainty of I WILL. |
