Thoughts to Live By

A SENSE OF PURPOSE.
The ability to set a goal for yourself, to work
toward something that
you know is worth your effort, to know the direction
you want to go and to be
able to live that dream.
A SENSE OF YOURSELF.
The
ability to assess your own abilities and find
the best outlet for them
steering a clear-eyed course between letting real
talents atrophy and forcing
yourself, for the wrong reasons beyond your
capacities.
A SENSE OF RELATIVE VALUES.
Someone very wise once said that the
ultimate art of living lies
in knowing what we can do without. I wish you, then,
the wit and wisdom to pick
and choose - the better to enjoy the ultimate
selection.
A SENSE OF INVOLVEMENT.
It takes a concious effort, it doesn't just
happen
*to communicate with,
to really get to know, those around you. It
means taking first
step, reaching out to others even if they're not
reaching out to you.
I wish you this skill.
A SENSE OF TIMING.
Your own time is the most priceless possession
that you have. Use
it wisely. Do not try to stretch it beyond its
capacity by overlooking
yourself so that none of your endeavors receives
its proper share.
Give of it to others but hoard some of it for yourself
-time to contemplate.
Time to relax, time to live, time to dream, time to
be.
A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY.
A child's pleasure in life comes from
those things done for him
by others; an adult's pleasure comes from having
a hand in the doing.
I wish you the ability to enjoy the things that
happen to you and to enjoy
even more the things you make happen.
A SENSE OF FAITH.
The
ability to recognize an ultimate REALITY that
gives reason to all you
are and do, that goes beyond understanding to
belief, to live with your
doubts knowing that you will be the strongest
because of them. I
wish you faith.
A SENSE OF CELEBRATION.
Our lives are marked off by occassions,
both major and minor.
Mark them, celebrate them, make them special to
you and to those around
you. The ability to do so enriches the moment
and enriches the future
as well with a treasure of memories.
A SENSE OF WONDER.
The child's ability to wonder at the marvels of
the world about him is sometimes
lost as he grows older. My wish is
that you never lose yours.
I wish you questions.
A SENSE OF BEAUTY.
The ability to open yourself fully to the effect
of the beauty of the world
around you. I wish you a love affair with
life.
A SENSE OF FUN.
This is the ability to forget the rules, to ride
with the punches, to enjoy
what comes-whether or not you wished it that
way. I wish
you the gift of laughter and the freedom of play. Without
this last gift, my other
gifts are diminished a little; with it, each is
reinforced.
