This whole area was once several hundred meters higher, but during the Cretaceous period (100 millions years ago), a network of underground rivers ate away at the limestone bedrock, creating vast caverns. Eventually the roofs collapsed leaving only the eroded walls we see today.
Viñales is a fertile plain of several valleys separated by pincushion or "haystack" hills called MOGOTES reminiscent of the limestone hills of Quilin in southern China.

In 1920 it was rediscovered and boat trips now ply the undergound river through the electrically lit cave. Between 9 am to 6 pm daily, you can go 300m on foot and then travel 400m by boat, emerging near a small waterfall for a price of $ 3 USD.
