Viñales is a fertile plain of several valleys separated by pincushion or "haystack" hills called MOGOTES reminiscent of the limestone hills of Quilin in southern China.

This whole area was once several hundred meters higher, but during the Cretaceous period (100 millions years ago), a network of underground rivers ate away at the limestone bedrock, creating vast caverns. Eventually the roofs collapsed leaving only the eroded walls we see today.

The northern portion of the area around CUEVA DEL INDIO is the prettiest part of Viñales. This cave, 5,5 km north of Viñales village was previously inhabited by Indians.

In 1920 it was rediscovered and boat trips now ply the undergound river through the electrically lit cave. Between 9 am to 6 pm daily, you can go 300m on foot and then travel 400m by boat, emerging near a small waterfall for a price of $ 3 USD.

Madelin the girl with the red blouse in the picture is an excellent guide which who we made an express traveled by all the interesting places in Viñales, to her you may contact in Maria Luisa´s Casa in Salvador Cisnero # 142, besides Don Tomás Restaurante, or by phone 79 3390
