So what happened?
Almost overnight, Kuririn takes on a drastic change. From fighting with Gokuu, cheating in training, and pushing everyone away from him with as much haste as possible, to becoming Gokuu's laughing, smling best friend. It almost seems like Toriyama hated him one day, especting only to use him as a means of highlighting the main characters training period - and then the next day he suddenly changed his mind and decided that he liked Kuririn enough to make him a worthwhile character.. This creates a very rapid series of character phases.
As the days go by, Kuririn gets cuter and cuter. During a tough day of training at a construction sight, we get to see more about his past at the temple, officially making him a sympathetic character. Its realized why he always acted so tough and smug, and about his goals to be good enough to beat the ones who caused his so much hurt and humiliation growing up at the temple. It makes a big diffrence in the way that you look at him, and is an important step in realizing that Kuririn was going to stick around. Form that point on, you also start to see more for him and Gokuu together after that.
By the time the tournament comes around, Kuririn has been transformed. Eyes open and flesh colored, smiling, and generally more like the Kuririn we all know and love. He stutters and hides behind Gokuu and makes everyone laugh. Some of the old attitude remains, and a little bit of envy at Gokuu's apptitude in....well, everything. But for the most part, he's Kuririn. Cute, sweeet Kuririn.
