AGRIMONY   Agrimonia eupatoria

Also Known As: Stickwort, Cockleburr, Church Steeples.

Agrimony is indigenous to parts of Europe, temperate Asia and North America.  It is valued in traditional herbal medicine for its astringent action, and has therefore been used for diarrhea, as well as in external preparations for hemorrhoids.

Common use: Diarrhea (mild, acute); diuretic; liver tonic; kidney stones; bladder irritation; gastric disorders; peptic ulcers; tones the stomach & intestines; as a wash for inflammatory skin conditions, bruises, sprains & wounds.

An astringent is defined as an herb that tightens and contracts tissue, reduces irritation, secretions & discharges.  It is due to this ability why many herbalists believe that Agrimony may be helpful as a wash for skin inflammation and as a gargle for sore throats, among other things. Interestingly, one herbal reference noted that singers have used Agrimony as a gargle to help cut the mucus in their throats before singing. In other applications, it is said to be an effective diuretic, useful for kidney and bladder health; it is also used in traditional Chinese Medicine in various forms to stop bleeding.

Tea: Pour one cup of boiling water over 1/2 to 1 teaspoonful of herbs and allow to steep 4 to 7 minutes; strain. Adults only, drink 1 to 2 cups daily; one before breakfast and/or one at bedtime. If desired, add honey and/or lemon to suit taste.

Capsules: Take as an addition to the daily diet. Take 1 or 2 capsules three times daily with water at mealtimes
