ALLSPICE  Eugenia pimenta

Also Known As: Pimento

The popular Caribbean spice is used for more than just seasoning. The dried, aromatic berry of the Pimento tree, serves as a pleasant-tasting digestive aid, relieving most gastrointestinal disturbances.

Native to the West Indies and Central America, Allspice's name is derived from the fact the taste is described as a combination of such spices as Cloves, Juniper Berries, Cinnamon & Pepper. Even though it is most popularly used in cakes, cookies, pickling liquids, stews & meat dishes, medicinally, Allspice is used to stimulate digestion, improve the appetite and to generally strengthen the stomach. It is also used as a flavoring agent for bitter teas and to lessen the purgative effects of strong laxatives.

Common use: Digestive aid- gas, dyspepsia; diarrhea; colds; aromatic stimulant.

Current Traditional Use: Jamaicans use the tea for colds, menstrual cramps and upset stomach. In Costa Rica, Allspice treats indigestion, flatulence and diabetes. Cubans consider it a refreshing tonic. In Guatemala people apply the crushed berries to bruises and muscle and joint pain.

Culinary Use: Powdered Allspice is a popular seasoning. It has a taste that seems a combination of cinnamon, juniper, clove and pepper. It adds a warm, rich flavor to foods.

Tea: Pour one cup of boiling water over 1/2 to 1 teaspoonful of herbs and allow to steep 4 to 7 minutes; strain. Adults only, drink 1 to 2 cups daily; one before breakfast and/or one at bedtime. If desired, add honey and/or lemon to suit taste.

Capsules: Take as an addition to the daily diet. Take 1 or 2 capsules three times daily with water at mealtimes
