ANISE

Pimpinella anisum
Anise Seed has traditionally been used as a soothing digestive aid for indigestion, nausea, bloating, loss of appetite & other dyspeptic complaints. It is also said to be quite effective as an expectorant, and is thought to be helpful for coughs & colds.
Common use: Indigestion; gas; bloating; nausea; loss of appetite; belching; colic; mucus congestion; bronchitis; coughs; colds; fevers; flavoring agent for unpleasant tasting herbal teas.

This "licorice-flavored" spice is a well-known ingredient in candies and baked goods. However, its carminative properties also makes it an invaluable aid for stimulating digestion, relieving gas, and even helping to prevent fermentation of food in the stomach. Another traditional use for Anise has been as a bronchial aid, expelling mucus and relieving a persistent, irritable cough. It is important to remember that to make an effective tea, the seeds must be crushed in order to release Anise's naturally occurring elements. Additionally, Anise’s mild estrogenic activity probably accounts for its other traditional use- to promote milk in nursing mothers- and may also help to relieve some menopausal discomforts.
