BARBERRY Berberis

Also

Berry, Pepperidge Bush
Barberry
is a bitter tonic that was and still is considered a
traditional aid for liver and liver-related
problems, especially jaundice.
Common
use: Liver ailments; sluggish gallbladder;
spleen problems; blood purifier; infections; sore
throat; mouth ulcers, pyorrhea; gum diseases;
constipation (liver related). |

|
|
For centuries, Barberry has
been recognized for its medicinal benefits. In ancient Egypt,
physicians made a mixture of Barberry and fennel to prevent
plague. Native Americans use it as a tonic for the liver
and to provide strength after illness. Barberry was also popular
in the American colonies for jams, jellies, preserves and
candied.
Barberry is generally a main
ingredient in liver & gallbladder formulas as it supports
one of the most important functions of the liver- the secretion
of bile. Bile is the fluid stored in the gallbladder &
released as needed for digestion. It's necessary for the
digestion of fats as well as such fat soluble vitamins as A, D,
E and K. One of Barberry's active ingredients, Berberine is
valuable for fighting infections among other things. This
validates Barberry's use as an antiseptic gargle and mouthwash
for mouth irritations and as a therapeutic wash for skin
disorders.
