comparison to the leaves, Marshmallow root is believed to
be the stronger part of the plant. It contains a
protective substance that soothes and coats sore, inflamed
tissues, including the upper respiratory areas & the
gastrointestinal tract.

Common
use: Relieves irritated
mucous membrane of mouth & throat and associated
cough; soothing gargle; eyewash for sore, inflamed
eyes; increase and enrich flow of mother's milk.
Asthma; bronchitis; colds;
expectorant; sore throat; coughs (dry, tight,
harsh); laryngitis; pleurisy; gastritis; colitis;
gentle diuretic; prostatitis; cystitis; kidney
inflammation; kidney stones; drawing poultice
(combined with Slippery
Elm). |

As a demulcent (substance that
soothes & relieves irritated, inflamed tissue), Marshmallow
is recommended as an eyewash for sore, inflamed eyes and can be
a soothing eyewash for those who do a lot of reading &
computer work (soak 1/2 teaspoon of dried root in warm water for
20 minutes, strain, when cool enough, bathe eyes with the clear
tea). It
is
also recommended for relieving sore
throats, coughs, asthma and bronchitis.
Considered
a soothing diuretic for bladder irritation, it can be combined
with other diuretic
herbs to help dissolve and ease the passage of kidney
stones.
