August 29, 2004 The Last Day of the Olympics |
||||
Ok, while I didn't really "get into" the Olympics until last week, I still had a blast watching them and really enjoyed all the countries doing so well. But the best part? Jonathan Johnson. For those of you who don't know, he's a runner (I think he runs the 800m) and he is a senior at my very own TTU! We were all so proud when he actually made it to the Olympics and I waited anxiously for his turn.It finally came - for support I put on my Tech socks & wrapped up in my Tech blanket and held on to my Tech pillow (ok, I have a lot of Tech stuff). He was doing so good! For like 2/3 of the race he was either 1st or 2nd place! I was going ballistic!! Then as everyone got their second wind, all the other runners in his heat easily passed him. It sucked..... :( But you know what? It wasn't a complete loss. JJ was the only American running in his heat. The announcers on TV were quick to point out where he went to school and that he WAS the only American running. And you know what's cool? For 5 minutes, every American watching that race was cheering for one of OUR guys. They wanted a Tech kid from Abilene to win. JJ's only like 22 years old. This is his first Olympic games. So even though he didn't make it this time, he still did a great job, and he got his name out there, which I think is really important. So Jonathan, if you're reading this (which I doubt you are!), all of your Techsans want to say congratulations. We're proud of you. LONG LIVE THE MATADORS!! |
