THOMAS LITTLETON
Thomas and Mary 'Polly' (Matlock) Littleton are my Gr.gr.gr.grandparents.

Some of this information I contributed to Pat McDonald's webpage "Roots of Roane County". She has set up a section on her page for people to contribute their findings on the Littleton's of Roane County.  A link to her site is found on my home page.

. Thomas LITTLETON was born about 1768 in North Carolina.  He died after 1860 and before 1868 in Roane County, Tennessee.  In 1860 he was 92 years of age.  Although many researchers believe that Thomas is the son of William LITTLETON and Sarah COTTINGHAM....this HAS NOT been proven.  He married Mary MATLOCK about 1797 in Washington County, North Carolina.  Mary was born about 1782 in Virginia to William MATLOCK and Sarah UNKNOWN.  She died after the 1850 census and before 1860 census in Roane County, Tennessee. She was last listed as 68 years of age on the 1850 census.  She is thought to be buried in Cave Creek Cemetery in Roane County, probably near Thomas.

MARRIAGE: Washington County, TN. This is found in a deposition in Roane County, by Jesse Matlock, Mary's brother in 1870 (his age 72 1/2) he states his sister married Thomas Littleton in Washington County, TN.

NOTES: (1)He has a military marker on his grave for services in the Rev War. I do not believe that he served in this War. I believe that his father or grandfather both might have served. But not knowing who they are it is hard to say. Thomas was born 1768 and would not have been old enough to serve as he would have only been 9 year old when the war started. They have on the marker that he served in the 5th Regt of S.C.  No Military record can be found. One of Thomas’ grandchildren had this Military marker put on his grave without proving that he served.
(2)First record of Thomas in Roane County, TN was February 1805 when he purchased land from Brinkley next to the land of William Matlock.

COURT – Loose Leaf Roane County, Tennessee.
(1)George Matlock vs. Thomas Littleton: In the three suits ages upward of twenty-three years. Thomas Kitchen makes oath that George Matlock the plaintiff in the above suit departed this life about the 10th of November in the year 1826 and that he saw him buried in the county of Hendrick in the state of Indiana. Sig: Thomas Kitchen. Sworn to October 28, 1828....

(2)Petition for ??????? Matlock vs. Tho Littleton. Writs agreed 1st May 1828. Thomas Littleton showeth that in 1825 George Matlock sold him 2 horses and he was to pay total sum of $50.00 on 17th October 1826, $48.00 on 25 October 1826, then $15.00 due 27 October 1826.  He said that the horses were not what Matlock said they were to be.  He also states that the reason he did not appeal was due to a certain Eli Lea from the state of Ohio or Indiana (perhaps) when Matlock deceased was in the county.   He petitions at that time he was not advised there was any irregularity in the proceedings - but is now advised the whole is utterly void, and he believes said Lea has no legal right to control said suits in any way whatever.  Sworn to in open court on May 1st 1828.  Sig: Thomas Littleton (looks like Thomas's signature)....
