How to put your washtub together...

1.  Take the handles off your washtub or else they will rattle while you play.
2. You need to put a hole in the middle of the bottom of the washtub; you can drill it or just use a block of wood and a hammer and nail to accomplish this.
3. You will need two nuts, two metal washers that will fit an eyebolt, (which you will need also) and a piece of leather (or a piece of rubber if you are a vegan) cut to the same size as the washer (this also needing a hole through the center)
4. Put one of the metal washers on the eyebolt and place it through the hole in the washtub.
5. Proceed to place the leather then the other metal washer on the eyebolt.
6. Put on one nut and tighten it all down snug, then put the other nut on to act as a locking nut.
7. You can get creative with your washtub and paint it (which can definitely draw even more attraction to this wonderful instrument, I had one once called the "Bucket 'o Love", it was awesome!!!)
8. You will need some type of rope - different ropes make different sounds- we have used ski rope, trotline, window sash, regular nylon rope.
9. Next is the staff, traditionally a mop handle with a slot made into the bottom to fit the washtub and a hole in the top for the rope or you can use a sturdy limb from a tree.  The length of the limb should be slightly taller than you when you are standing on the ground.  (and remember you can also play while standing on the outside top edges but don't stand in the middle and watch out for people who will try to use your instrument as a chair...oops)
10. Attach the rope to the washtub in a secure tight knot.
11. Attach the other end of the rope to the top of the staff - don't worry if you have a little extra length because that can come in handy in case the rope breaks and you need to make a quick repair.  Tie securely with another knot.  This process might require a few adjustments until you get where it feels right.
12. Traditionally this instrument is played as if it had frets but you can also move the staff to control the tension of the rope to create the different notes.  Once you get your balance down you can "ride" the tub and lift it as you play to create even more volume and bass effects.
Have a bunch of fun!!!!!!!
